Smallpox

Source: Crawfordsville Review 6 July 1895 p 1

There is great excitement in Covington.  Five cases of smallpox are now under treatment there and it is stated that several other cases will be reported in a few days. A drummer said the other day that hardly a person could be seen on the et and that business was almost suspended. There should be a quarantine established to keep the awful disease under control. The Covington marshal, it is rumored was notified that some person was coming in there with the disease, but he did not pay any attention to it until he was forced to, it being too late then to stop it from spreading!

Veedersburg is having a serious time with small pox. About 30 cases have developed and many more have been exposed. The disease is in a mild form and those having it get up and go around making the situation very bad to control.  The State Board of Health has forbidden all public meetings and ordered a strict quarantine.
