Christopher & Phoebe Campbell Newer - 50th anniversary
Source: Logansport Pharos-Tribune - 11 August 1909 p 5
Mr. and Mrs. James C. Newer celebrated their golden wedding anniversary today at their home on Burlington avenue with a large number of their relatives present to help them enjoy the pleasant event. They began their wedded life on August 11, 1859, Mrs. Newer's maiden name being Phebe A. Campbell. Mr. Newer was born Dec. 26, 1838, in Newtown, Fountain county, Ind., and Mrs. Newer was born April 1, 1840, in Carroll county. Eight children were born of this union, namely: Perry F. Newer, living seven miles south of the city on Michigan road; Charles M. Newer of 430 Burlington avenue, this city; B. F. Newer of Helm and Cicott streets; George W. Newer, residing nine miles south on the Michigan road; Minnie M. Newer-Brown, three miles west of Burlington; Albert A. Newer nine miles south on Michigan road; Lillie F. Newer-Thompson of 2205 east Broadway, William R. Newer, another son, has been dead for some time. There are sixteen grandchildren but no great-grandchildren. Mr. Newer, following his marriage, taught school for eight terms and farmed in the summer time. Later he engaged in the stone business, which he followed for ten years at Deer Creek. He also served as justice of the peace for two terms, once while he lived in the country and another term after he moved to the city fifteen years ago. Mr. Newer has always been considered a thrifty citizen and good manager and by his industry has accumulated a competence, owning at the present time about 800 acres of land between this city and Deer Creek, enough to keep him in abundance in his declining days and a tidy remembrance for his children when he shall have finished with it all.
NICE write-up -- thanks so much Ginny A for sending it - kz
