Freedom Church - Burned

Source: Covington Friend 1-11-1895

Freedom Church, familiarly known as Bowers located about 3 miles northwest of Wallace was totally destroyed by fire last Friday afternoon.  A few members were at the church at the time the fire occurred and were making preparations to clean the house and had water on the outside heating for the purpose of scrubbing there also being fire in the stove within the house when suddenly they were surprised and startled to find a column of smoke bursting forth and soon the building was a mass of flames. The fire was supposed to have originated from a defective flue as it was first discovered in the ceiling.  Unprovided with any accessible means of extinguishing flames they had only to hasten and save what they could. They managed to remove the organ and all of the furniture with the exception of three seats. The estimated loss is $800 with no insurance.  The loss is a heavy one on the community as it was through untiring efforts and liberal donations that it was erected – Wallace correspondent. - kbz
