These records were gathered by John Ward, owned by Harold Hoagland (his great, great grandson - blessings upon you two for preserving such a treasure) in the 2000s and copied and typed by Mrs. Homer Royal. The Poor Farm began in Fountain County at least in 1842, possibly earlier. The Fountain County Genealogy Society visited the cemetery site in 2009 and there were only a couple of stones that existed where it is know that well over 100 was buried there.
Thanks to my guru historian who seems to be able to help me out with any question I have in FoCo.

NOTE: S sent me this one too - sure it is the same man but not sure which name is correct -- Source: Covington Republican Friday, March 31, 1899

_
Last Friday morning a tramp was brought down to the poor farm from Attica, and he presented a horrible sight, being literally roasted. About half past three o'clock Friday morning parties at the Wabash depot, Attica, were startled by a series of shrill shrieks in the direction of the tile factory, and on looking in that direction were horrified to see a man all a mass of flames rushing toward them. After recovering from the shock they shouted to the fellow to lie down and roll on the ground. But he kept on running until he stumbled and fell into a small stream of water running through a ravine near the depot. Parties then ran to his assistance and found him lying on his face in the water and perfectly helpless. The flames burned nearly all his clothing from his body and his arms, breast and back were literally roasted. A physician was summoned who did all in his power to relieve the poor fellow's sufferings. It was learned the unfortunate man was a tramp by the name of Frank Armbuerts, and his home was at Garrett, Ill. He had gone to one of the tile kilns, started a fire and laid down to sleep, the flames had ignited his clothing and when he awoke he was a mass of flames. When brought down to the poor farm, he was under the influence of opiates. On regaining consciousness he was informed that he could not survive his injuries and was questioned as to his family. He gave his name and home and said he had two sisters living at Peru, but would not give their names. He claimed to have been a soldier in the war of the rebellion and to have been on his way to some point in Ohio to secure evidence in a pension claim. All that was possible was done for him, but he suffered untold agony until late Friday afternoon, when death came to his relief.

Hamilton Bartlett is listed in the Bartlett Cemetery in Warren County, Indiana but I do not believe he is buried there. No proof as to a stone, death record, obit, etc., and I also don't think he is buried on the County Farm property as on his death record it says he is buried in Attica, Indiana but does not give a specific cemetery so will leave him here for now since he did indeed die at the poor farm from general weakness and heart failure according to Dr. James Lowery the poor farm physician. He passed way at 9 in the evening (Indiana Deaths 1901 p 13 Fountain County Indiana). No parents or their births are given. He is listed as being born in 1832 in the listing above but he was born in April 1827 so was older than their guestimate (1900 poor farm census listing). Rest in Peace HB where ever you may be. If I find an obituary that tells exactly where he is, I will switch him otherwise, here he lies!

Note: He was buried on Dec 9, 1891 in the Poor Farm Cemetery from an index of the Poor Farm Cemetery of Fountain County, Indiana and some information from records kept by John Ward -- Nelson Nebeker, likely a Poor Farm Superintendent or friend gave the information about George -- I looked for him in the 1880 census - found a George W. and a George R. and neither seemed to be him. Anyone knows anything about him, please let me know :)

John was 70 in 1860 census living with William Ireland and his large family. Listed as a laborer. In 1870 he is in the Poor House and is 75 - in both places it lists him as being been in England. FAGr won't let you put approximate dates so I just kind of split the difference of the two census records age 70 in 1860 and 75 in 1870. He passed away sometime between 1870 and 1880. Rest in Peace John

On John's Death Record (Certificate of Death 1907 p 33) it states he is buried in the County Poor Farm cemetery. Most of these DR are very sparse but his was a good one, giving his father as Staten Brown, born in NC and mother, Penelope Smith, born NC. He passed on August 8th, 1907 from "Inanition due to refusal of food/medicine - contributory - cerebral softening." Informant was Henrietta Ennis, RFD, Covington. M. Boord Funeral Director almost always buried those from the poor house as well as with John Brown. My goal putting this cemetery here is to make sure these people are remembered so RIP, John!!

At Covington on the 20th, Thomas Dooley, an Irishman, employed at the County Poor Farm, was found in the Wabash Canal, his head above water and alive. On being taken out, his body was found to be putrefied, and he died in a short time. Dooley was on a jamboree on the 18th, and is believed to have fallen into the canal and laid in the water until found.

Although there is nothing to 100% guarantee this poor Irish fellow would have been buried at the Covington Poor Farm he does not seem to have a tombstone or information indicating anything else and I'd like for him to at least have a place here!!

Note: Hope the Dow ones are death records vs. when they came into the home as was sort of indicated in some other records; but I'd not think a family would come on a few different dates but if they had a disease they certainly could pass on different days and might be why they were at the home - sick and couldn't care for each other. It was noted that there was also another one - Michael Dow - who ran away on the 8th - wouldn't that be hard to watch your parents die and your brother getting worse ? Alice may have been an only child of William and Harriet Drollinger. Her death record (1913 p 70 Fountain County Certificate of Death Registered # 144) says she was born in Fountain County but I suspicion Clinton or at least the family was there when she was young. The Informant on her death record was not a family member, but Sam H. Sowers, the superintendent of the poor home. She died on Christmas Eve 1913 at 10:45 p.m. at "the county infirmary." It is noted that she is buried "at Indianapolis." A couple of others were too which likely meant she was used for science as she had "Bright's Disease?" and arteriosclerosis at her death. Dr. CC Wert was the doctor who took care of the county farm patients and he signed her death records. I have several county farm folks listed for the Montgomery County Poor Farm as well and when they note "Indianapolis" or "Medical Purposes" they don't seem to return or seem to be buried in a cemetery in the big city, thus I'm listing Alice so that she will have a "place to rest," so to speak !
