George Wendell Piersol
The above is a good likeness of George Wendell PIERSOL,
one of Jamestown's substantial business men, whose life
history might be summed up in three short words, viz;
Honesty, Integrity, Frugality. He was born on the spot where
now stands the residence of George W. SHOCKLEY on
August 28, 1864, the youngest of four children, his
ancestors being of that staid old Holland Dutch stock. He
was educated in Jamestown public schools where he always
stood well up in his classes and in addition to this he has
ever been known as a reader of the best books to be had as
well as a student of current events. At twenty two years of
age he entered the local railway office to learn telegraphy
and railway business , being appointed local agent to the
Big Four in August 1877 which position he held for ten years
during which time he gained the enviable reputation of being
one of the most efficient men in the service, being
compelled a number of times to refuse offers of promotion on
account of circumstances over which he had no control. In
1890 he formed a partnership with M. H. ROBERTS and
opened a private bank under the firm name of PIERSOL
& ROBERTS which institution gained the entire
confidence of the business public and enjoyed a phenomenal
and steady increasing business. At the reorganization of the
bank, July 1, 1903 it was merged into a state institution,
when Mr. PIERSOL was made cashier which position he now
holds. He was married on March 17, 1897 to Miss Elenora
BEST with whom, together with their two little
daughters, he is enjoying the fruits of his labors in their
pleasant home on West Main Street. As boy and as man,
George, has ever been frugal and faithful to his friends.
