A Peculiar Find
Jamestown Press
Jamestown [Boone County] Indiana
Friday, 6 July 1900
A few days ago while James Garrigus of Tangier was standing
on the banks of Rush Creek he noticed what he thought was a
back of a turtle in the creek. Going to his blacksmith shop
which is near by, he secured an iron rod and began punching
it, finding that it was some hard substance. He got it out
and was surprised to find a valuable relic. It is the shape
of an urn of ancient times and a vessel used in case of
necessity. It is about one foot high and the same in
diameter, well shaped with oval bottom, while the sides
circle out coming to a small ring at the top. Fastened to
this is a perfect lid and when found there was a knob in the
center of the lid. The relic is solid sandstone and what is
peculiar, there is no such stone in that local vicinity. It
weighs 50 pounds and though curosity [sic], Mr. Garrigus
drilled into the top about 3 inches, finding some kind of
metal that stood an acid test. It appears to be filled with
a metal and is indeed a curosity. - VEEDERSBURG NEWS-
