House Burned

Jamestown [Boone County] Indiana

House Burned

The farm residence of W. H. COX three miles northeast of Jamestown on the Lebanon road was destroyed by fire Saturday night. The fire was of incendiary origin being the second attempt with in[sic] three weeks to burn the building. The fire was started in the cellar and when discovered by the family was under such headway that it was possible to save only a part of the house hold[sic] articles. The family was awakened by one of the children that was strangled by the smoke. The fire occurred about 2 o'clock in the morning. When the first attempt was made to burn the house it was occupied by Geo. GERKIN but he moved to Lebanon last week and Mr. Cox and family moved from Jamestown Thursday and Friday.

The house was a six-room structure of brick and a two-room frame addition, with a good cellar beneath. Mr. Cox carried a $700 insurance on the building and a $200 on contents in the Boone County Cooperative Company. Mr. COX had just purchased a fine kitchen range and a large heating stove and they were destroyed in the fire. He will occupy a small house on Tom BLAKEMORE'S place near Old Union till he has a new residence erected, preparations of which he has already begun.
