Emmert Family Reunion - 1916

Advance Hustler
Boone County, Indiana
Sept. 14, 1916

Nearly 200 people attended the first annual reunion of the Emmert's at Mt. Zion, Saturday. Before noon the hour was spent in regular reunion order. At noon the Advance orchestra played hungry marches while the ladies hurriedly set the tables. One of the Emmert's went so far as to suggest that it was possible that there were more eatables at this reunion than any other reunion ever held thus trying to make believe the Emmert's were the best of cooks and the best producers of eatables. After dinner the crowd assembled, some groaned, some nodded; and some listened to the orchestra play 'wake up' and other appropriate selections. Readings were given by Margaret Dayton, Anna Canada and Mrs. Jerry Higgins. The historian, Granville Wells, told of Sime Emmert of Tennessee, whose son came to Union County 1830, thence to Boone in 1833 locating in Jefferson township near Walnut Creek. Mt. Zion class was organized in Peter Emmert's home in 1840. He lived about 40 rods east of present Mt. Zion church. Six generations have and are now living in this vicinity. The same number is represented in the Mt. Zion cemetery a favorite burial ground for the Emmert families. Rev. Rufus Emmert is the only one of the Emmert's who preaches although the family almost entirely are ardent church workers. He gave an address. A wedding suit of Peter Emmert, owned by Robert Ferguson, a bible of Peter Emmert owned by William Whiteman, both 122 years old were exhibited. Isaac Emmert of Lebanon, of the third generation is the oldest Emmert living. Ice cream was served after which the following officers were elected: Pres., J. D. Emmert; Vice Pres., J. M. Emmert; Secy., Mrs. J. D. Emmert; Treas., Geo. Shaw; History Granville Wells. After paying expenses $6.00 was left in treasury.
