Thomas Asa Sutphin left his wife, Vinetta (Goad) and three sons in Virginia and came to Boone County, Indiana about 1870 to provide a home for his family. After working for a very small wage, he rented a house near Sheperdsville in Perry Township and sent for his family. They lived in different places and with assistance of the boys working, finally succeeded in purchasing a few acres about three miles west of Lebanon on the Old Big Four Railroad. To this union was born William, Earl, Jordan, John, Charles, Lulu, Mary (Mollie), Austin, Jabe, Alva, Bessie, George, Delilah who died at an early age (22), of typhoid. Two small Children passed away in Virginia. He served in the Civil War for the South.
