MARTHA CLARK STRONG
DIES THURSDAY ------- PIONEER HAD RESIDED IN
THIS COMMUNITY ALL OF HER LONG LIFE ------
Martha Emelining
Clark was born in Montgomery County, Indiana,
June 2nd 1851. Age 80 years and 1 month.
She was the
daughter of Ezekiel and Ibby Clark. The oldest
child of six. Two brothers and two sisters
preceded her in death, she is survived by one
sister, Mrs. Mary E. Hubble. Mrs. Strong was
twice married, the first union was with John
Carter while in her teens. Mr. Carter was a
Civil War Veteran and only lived about three
years after their union. About the year of 1885
she was married to John Strong who passed away
March 10, 1915. They made their home in
Thorntown. Mrs. Strong's father was also a Civil
War Veteran.
Consequently her
struggles of life were varied, she knew the
hardships of pioneers life. In the year 1888 a
lent meeting was conducted by Elder George
Reber and C. W. Ruth that gripped Aunt Mattie's
heart with conviction. She was radically
converted a few days later, she according to
Romans 12-1 obeyed the exhortation of Paul "I
beseech you therefore, brethren by the mercies
of God that ye present your bodies a living
sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God which is
your reasonable service." Her life exemplified
her profession of being sanctified.
Aunt Mattie united
with the Wesleyan Methodist Church at the
organization and was a charter member, this was
in the year 1888. Her life has been a "burning
and shining light" it has never gone out she
could well say with the prophet, "The zeal of
the house has eaten me up."
Rain or shine, sick
or well she was ready for service only missing
as sickness compelled her to do so. She had many
persecutions but her life convinced them of the
genuine of her sincerity. She was class leader
and called many times to pray for the dying. We
might say she was an unlicensed preacher. Mattie
was intelligent and witty and often her
experiences would provoke to laughter, they
gripped the hearts of the hearers and there was
a shout of victory not only in the Church but
many times in the home.
Mattie always had
an answer for everyone and was wise in the
sayings of God. Her home going was peaceful, she
offered a prayer at our family devotions the
last morning of her life. She enjoyed life and
God to spare her if his will, but always the
will be done was said in submission.
Gods saints were
always welcomed into her home and she was Aunt
Matty to all. She always tithed her money.
Aunt Mattie passed
away July 1931 at her home with the pastor of
the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Funeral services
were held Sunday morning from the church, Rev.
W.J. Bogue officiating. Interment was in
Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort, Clinton County,
Indiana.
"Can that woman be
dead whose spiritual influences is upon her
kind? She lives in glory, and her speaking dust
has more of life than half its breathing
moulds."
