1. Thomas Richard6 SHAPLEY (William5, William4, Samuel (7)3, Samuel (6)2, John1) was born

Notes for Thomas Richard SHAPLEY:

This is a biography of the life of Thomas R . SHAPLEY

The chief characteristics of Thomas R. Shapley , a carpenter and builder by trade , but who has
long managed a good farm successfully in Marion Township , Boone County , Indiana , are keenness of perception, an unflagging energy, honesty of purpose and motive and ever-day common sense, which have enabled him not only to advance his own interests, but also largely contribute to the civic and material advancement of the locality. He worked his way from a modest beginning, having landed from a foreign strand on our shores a half century ago, "a youth to fortune and to fame unknown," in the line of his own great countryman,
the poet Gray, and step by step has reached a position of comfort an no mean importance , his individual efforts having been unaided, which fact renders him the more worthy of the praise that is freely accorded him by his fellow-men. His life has been one of unceasing energy and perseverance, and the honorable and systematic methods he has ever employed are commended to others, if they court the goddness success. Mr. Shapley was born in Devonshire, England, November 5, 1843. He is the son of William and Mary (Doney) Shapley, natives of England where they grew up, and married and spent their lives. And there our subject grew to manhood and received his education in the common schools which
was limited, he having left school when he was nine years old, but he has become a well informed man through travel and home reading. When fifteen years of age, he left England on board an English trading ship which was ship-wrecked off the coast of Greenland among icebergs, seven hundred miles from home. They were there four days and four nights without food and shelter and endured many hardships from cold as well as hunger. They were finally rescued by another ship and brought to Newfoundland and from there sailed back to England.
In 1863, when twenty years old, he emigrated to the United States, landing in New York, where he worked at a carpenter's trade which he had learned in his native country. Six months later he invaded the middle west, locating Medora, Indiana, Jackson County, where he worked a year, then went to Roundsville Tennessee, remaining there a year, then began traveling and visited most sections of the Union. He was in Chicago during the memorable year of 1871 when the "Queen City of the West" was destroyed by fire, he remained there engaging in the work of rebuilding for some time. In 1874 he returned to England, and on May 11 that year married Mary Gould Madge, of Devonshire, soon thereafter returning with his bride to Chicago, Illinois and continued his trade there about eight years, then moved to Boone County, Indiana, Marion Township, where he purchased 80 acres of timber land, which he cleared and improved at odd times, but continued his trade all the while. As he prospered he added 40 acres more and for many years has devoted his attention mainly to general farming and stock raising, at which he has been most successful. He has brought his farm up to an excellent state of improvement and cultivation, and has a good home and substantial
outbuildings . The first children of Mr. and Mrs. Shapley were triplets, born in Chicago, Illinois, two of whom are now living. William Doney Shapley married Nettie Powell and they live in Boone County, Marion Township; and Rebecca Shapley is the wife of Martin M. Hand, of Hamilton County Indiana; Rosa Mary Shapley, the fourth child which was born in Boone County, Indiana, is the wife of Manora E. Hand, of Hamilton County also. Our subject and wife also reared a niece, a child of Mr. Shapley's brother James; her name is Frances Pearl Shapley, now the wife of Austin Sutphin. Politically, Mr. Shapley is a Democrat, and he has served his township as a road supervisor. Religiously, he is a member of the Episcopal Church. The happy home of our subject was invaded by death on October 18, 1910, when Mrs. Shapley
was called to her eternal rest. She was buried in Spencer Cemetery Adams Township, Hamilton County, Indiana. She was a good helpmate and worthy life companion, a woman of many praiseworthy qualities. Thomas R . Shapley died December 31, 1917, and buried beside his wife in Spencer Cemetery, ................. A GOOD MAN .

Notes for Mary Gould MADGE:
This is the Obituary of Mary GOULD MADGE.

Mary Gould Madge was born at St. Mary's Clift, England, on August 16,1844. Died October 18, 1910, age 66 years, 2 months, and 2 days. In Marion Township, Boone County, Indiana. She began life's work as a servant girl at age 9 years of age. Was married to Thomas R. SHAPLEY at Chudliegh, Devon County, England, on May 11,1874, and on May 26, 1874 emigrated to the USA, landing in New York city on the first day of the following June, and finding their way to Indiana by the way of Chicago, Illinois. In Chicago she gave birth to triplets, only two survived, William and Rebecca. While in Chicago they stayed with George Shapley, which was Thomas's uncle. In Indiana they located on the site of their present home in Marion Township in the year 1876, enduring such hardships as the pioneer only knows in transforming the conditions of then to now. Three children have been born into this family, William, Rebecca, and Rose Mary and with Pearl who came to make her home with them at seven weeks old. These, with a husband, two little grand-daughters, Grace A. Hand and Pauline Shapley, one brother, Henry Madge, and several nephews and nieces and a host of friends remain to mourn their loss. Mrs. Shapley was a good neighbor, a good wife and a loving mother, her sympathy going out for those in sickness and distress. We know something of a mother's love, of the kind words spoken, of the touch of a gentle hand, her warm sympathy for her children. Our hearts are sad our spirits are bowed with grief, but we hope again when we hear the kind words of Him who said that, "sooner would the mother forget her darling babe than I would forget one of my children who trust in Me" Isa.49:15. And while we consign her body to the tomb our hearts are sad with the thoughts of this separation for we know He said, "Dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return" Gen. 3:19. But faith looks up again when we hear the voice of Him who spake to the sorrowing sisters of Bethany and said, "I'm the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in Me though he were dead yet shall he live again "John 11:25. And we believe that this body will be carefully watched by the eye of that Savior who is the author of her and her existence. Looking beyond these scenes of sickness and heartaches and sighs and tears and new made graves, our vision grows brighter of meeting again "in that land and city where the light never grows dim and the living never die" Rev.21:23.
