JAMES
HAMILTON2
RILEY
(PATRICK1)
was born 1780 in Virginia, and died April 30,
1856 in Indiana. He married (1) NANCY
RENFRO
1798 in Cumberland Gap, Virginia. She was born
Abt. 1783, and died Abt. 1815 in Kentucky. He
married (2) DELILAH
GIBSON
May 23, 1816 in Clay County, Kentucky, daughter
of WILLIAM
GIBSON
and NANCY
ROARK.
She was born 1798 in Virginia, and died July 09,
1863 in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana.
Notes for JAMES
HAMILTON
RILEY:
DELILAH GIBSON
RILEY
Delilah Riley made out her Lat Will and Testament on June 24, 1863. On
July 9, 1863, witnesses came forth to swear to
seeing her sign her mark to that Last Will and
Testament.
Here are some
excerpts from that will:
"I, Delilah Riley
of Boone County, Indiana, being of sound mind
and memory and considering the uncertainty of
this frail and transitory life, do therefore
make, ordain and publish and declare this to be
my last will and testament. Revoking all others.
To wit: First I give and bequeath to my beloved
son William Riley, one note which I hold on him
calling for one-hundred and twenty five dollars,
date September 1st 1858.
Also I will and
bequeath to my beloved son William Riley a
certain sorrel mare, now in his possession.
Also I will and
bequeath to my beloved son William Riley, the
care and collection of the notes that which I
hold on, which she mentions dollar amounts and
names.
I will and bequeath
to my beloved son Jacob Riley one hundred
dollars when collected of (name mentioned), also
one bed stead and bed clothing and yearling
calf. I will and bequeath to my beloved son
William Riley forty five dollars the residue of
said note on (name mentioned) to pay my funeral
expenses.
I will and bequeath
to all the legal heirs, one dollar each. To Wit:
Allen Riley, Samuel Riley, James Riley, John
Riley, Rebecca Davis, Margaret Tramel, Nancy
Crum, Catherine Riley, deceased, her heirs and
Zachariah Riley."
Note: James and
Delilah had a daughter named Rachel also and we
must assume that she was also deceased, probably
before 1856. At the time that this document was
written, her son Patrick was deceased and also
her son Isaac , he had died in the Civil War are
not mentioned. We find it strange that she does
not mention their heirs for both Patrick and
Isaac had children.

Notes for NANCY
RENFRO:
NANCY RENFRO
It is believed that
Nancy Renfro Riley may have died at the same
time of the birth and death of their youngest
child in Kentucky.
According to Ralph
Riley in The Riley Book by Steve Meek: Nancy
Renfro's father is said to have purchased land
along the route of the Cumberland Gap. He has an
Inn and a stable or corral for horses and
livestock and put up a toll gate and charged a
fee for passage through his land on the
Cumberland Gap. It is said that he became a very
very wealthy man , what with the toll charge and
a fee for watering the stock and horses and the
fact that he owned the Inn and Tavern.
The is a book
called the Wilderness Road that alludes to this
man named Renfro. The trail was sometimes called
the Irish Road in reference to the many Scotch
and Irish who passed along this road from
Virginia to Kentucky.

CATHERINE3
RILEY
(JAMES

was born 1819 in Kentucky, and died Bef. 1850 in
Indiana. She married PATRICK
RILEY
III February 06, 1839, son of ZACHARIAH
RILEY
and MARY
GIBSON.
He was born December 12, 1812 in Kentucky.
Notes for CATHERINE
RILEY:
CATHERINE RILEY
This Catherine
Riley wed OUR PATRICK RILEY by the year 1839 and
presumably in Indiana. They are found in Taney
County, Missouri in the year 1840. We figure
that OUR PATRICK RILEY and this #1 wife
Catherine (Riley) Riley went down to Missouri
along with OUR PATRICK'S FATHER, OLD ZACHARIAH
RILEY and there in Missouri their first child
was born. In the year 1843, they returned to
Boone County, where their second child was born.
In 1850 OUR PATRICK
RILEY is in the same dwelling as this
Catherine's brother, Isaac Riley. Catherine does
not appear in this Census taking in 1850, but
their 2 small children are with Patrick.
We do know that OUR
PATRICK RILEY wed on January 24, 1851 at Boone
County, Indiana to his second wife. Her name was
also Catherine Riley. She was the daughter of
Thomas Riley and Maragret (Peggy) McIntosh. this
Thomas Riley was the brother to OUR PATRICK
RILEY'S FATHER, OLD ZACHARIAH RILEY and also
brother to OLD JAMES HAMILTON RILEY.
We know that OUR
PATRICK RILEY and his #2 wife Catherine (Riley)
Riley were cousins and it appears that his #1
wife Catherine (Riley) was also a cousin.
In the Estate
Distribution papers of JAMES HAMILTON RILEY,
Catherine's father, the 2 children of Catherine
and OUR PATRICK RILEY are designated as
recipients of her share of her Father's estate
and she, Catherine Riley is noted as being
deceased.
It is interesting
to note that Catherine's younger brother is
declared to be under the guardianship of OUR
PATRICK RILEY at that time, even though Delilah,
his mother is still living. That was in 1856.

married CATHERINE
RILEY
February 06, 1839, daughter of JAMES
RILEY
and DELILAH
GIBSON.
She was born 1819 in Kentucky, and died Bef.
1850 in Indiana.
Notes for CATHERINE
RILEY:
CATHERINE RILEY
This Catherine
Riley wed OUR PATRICK RILEY by the year 1839 and
presumably in Indiana. They are found in Taney
County, Missouri in the year 1840. We figure
that OUR PATRICK RILEY and this #1 wife
Catherine (Riley) Riley went down to Missouri
along with OUR PATRICK'S FATHER, OLD ZACHARIAH
RILEY and there in Missouri their first child
was born. In the year 1843, they returned to
Boone County, where their second child was born.
In 1850 OUR PATRICK
RILEY is in the same dwelling as this
Catherine's brother, Isaac Riley. Catherine does
not appear in this Census taking in 1850, but
their 2 small children are with Patrick.
We do know that OUR
PATRICK RILEY wed on January 24, 1851 at Boone
County, Indiana to his second wife. Her name was
also Catherine Riley. She was the daughter of
Thomas Riley and Maragret (Peggy) McIntosh. this
Thomas Riley was the brother to OUR PATRICK
RILEY'S FATHER, OLD ZACHARIAH RILEY and also
brother to OLD JAMES HAMILTON RILEY.
We know that OUR
PATRICK RILEY and his #2 wife Catherine (Riley)
Riley were cousins and it appears that his #1
wife Catherine (Riley) was also a cousin.
In the Estate
Distribution papers of JAMES HAMILTON RILEY,
Catherine's father, the 2 children of Catherine
and OUR PATRICK RILEY are designated as
recipients of her share of her Father's estate
and she, Catherine Riley is noted as being
deceased.
It is interesting
to note that Catherine's younger brother is
declared to be under the guardianship of OUR
PATRICK RILEY at that time, even though Delilah,
his mother is still living. That was in 1856.

In the Ralph
Riley's book, it has four children listed for
Margaret and Zachariah Riley, I question the
dates he has for the births of the children.
Margaret and Zachariah were married in 1882, and
their first child was born in 1863? Need to ask
Carolyn about this.

JOHN W. RILEY
Ivan Riley's

His Aunt Permelia
Coombs, older sister of his mother, Pasty Sexson
Riley, also moved to this Northwest Missouri,

RILEY HISTORY
Nimrod and Martha (Patsy) Sexson Riley moved from near Advance,
Boone County, Indiana, to Coles County, Illinois
in the fall of 1860.
Uncle Bruce W.
stated they had $800.00 in gold and great-great
grandmother Martha Sexson made a false bottom
for her sauerkraut jar, putting the money in the
bottom of the kraut on top. With this money they
purchased 120 acres of land in Pleasant Grove
Township, Coles County, Illinois, and built
their home in 1864, the building still stands.
Their is an old
Testament that reads given to Nimrod Riley by
his mother Delilah Riley and covered by a piece
of her calico dress. His father James Riley, son
of Patrick Riley who came from Ireland.
John W. Riley told
the Riley family history as, his father Nimrod
was born Clay County, Kentucky, they started to
Indiana on horseback in 1828, stopping in
Shelbyville, Kentucky, and then the next year or
1830 they made the trip on horseback to
Jamestown, Boone County, Indiana. Following
Delilah Gipson's family, who settled near
Jamestown in 1828 or 1829.
He also mentioned a
sister of Nimrod by the name of Sarah. Later in
early 1820a, James H. Riley, four brothers,
Zachary, Thomas, Allen, Zodak and John came to
Indiana, some went back to Kentucky. and later
moved to south central part of Missouri, others
moved direct to Missouri, from Indiana. Patrick
Riley, brother of James H. & Zachariah moved to
Missouri.
Regarding Zachariah
Riley born 1790, who married Mary Gipson, March
6, 1812, Clay County, Kentucky. This information
furnished by, Kathy & Sam Riley and Ellen and
Ralph Riley of State of Washington they have
been working on the Riley History for 10 years.
They are descendants of Patrick Riley, son of
Zachariah and Mary Gipson Riley. The family had
moved to Montgomery County, Indiana. By 1839
they had moved to Missouri.

HAS LIVED HERE, ALMOST HALF A CENTURY
Recently this paper
ran a story about the "old settlers" of Wes Des

interesting to hear from various residents who
have made this community their home for a long
period. ARTICLE IN W.D.M. EXPRESS
One of the oldest
residents from that standpoint proved to be
Charles Hix/Hicks, 614 Ninth Street, who
accepted his first job as a Rock Island fireman
here on December 17, 1892, and thus is now well
along on the 49th year of his residence in this
community.
Mr. Hix/Hicks was
promoted by Rock Island in 1902 and served that
road as an engineer for many years, retiring
about a year ago on pension. he has five living
children. Mrs. Hix/Hicks died in 1929.
At the present
time, Mr. Hix/Hicks is 68 years old and enjoys
fairly good health. he can look back upon a long
lifetime of usefulness to his employers and to
his community. He makes his home with his
daughter at 614 Ninth Street.

A REMARKABLE MAN
BY STEVE MEEK
On April 25, 1962,
a life long resident of Boone County died at the
Davis Nursing Home in Zionsville where he had
been since November, 1960. he was truly a
remarkable man. Although he was proud of the
fact he was Irish, he did not have the notorious
Irish temperament. He was a humble man, slow to
anger and quick to forget, had a kind word for
everyone, and was loved by everyone he
encountered in his life at Thorntown. Losing his
mother when just an infant, he loved his
grandmother dearly in whose home he grew up only
to lose her to an accidental fire when she was
103. he started work at the age of 13 at the old
brick factory in Thorntown which at that time
was located across from the Maple Lawn Cemetery,
Thomas Patrick
"Pat" Riley was born in Boone County on May 4,
1873, the son of Ebenezer and Eunice S. Gossett
Riley. Ebenezer was born in Jennings County,
Indiana, on march 19 1832, the second son of
Allen and Elizabeth Sweetin Riley, both natives
of Kentucky. Eunice was born in Boone County on
April 18, 1853, the daughter of Thomas W. and
Jerusha Ruth Frazier Gossett, both natives of
North Carolina.
About 1827 Ebenezer
was married in Jennings County to Mary Arnold by
whom he had seven children.
Pat and Mary were
the parents of eleven children.
Pat and Mary were
members of the Wesleyan methodist church in
Thorntown and attended services every Sunday.
That was their day of rest.
The rest of the
week Pat worked at gardening, general hauling,
and was caretaker for most of the cemeteries at
Thorntown. In 1957 he had his first stroke and
had to give up his horses which were his pride
and joy. He soon recovered and was active
although he no longer worked.
Mary Jan Riley died
on May 22, 1965, at Zionsville. She and Pat are
buried in the Sugar Plains Cemetery. With their
passing, Boone County lost two of the finest
citizens.

EDITH
RILEY:
FLORA EDITH RILEY
Flora Edith, third
daughter of Moses E. and Laura Riley, she was
born in Montgomery County, February 7, 1894 and
departed this life January 16, 1914, age 19
years, 11 months and 9 days. She was united in
marriage to Ira Carr, March 27, 1912. One son
Leroy was born to this union.
Flora was a kind
and loving daughter and sister. During her
sickness which began last May, she was always
patient and cheerful and expressed a readiness
to go to the One who gave her life.
She made friends
where ever she went, always of a laughing jolly
disposition with comforting words for her loved
ones. When asked how she was, her words were, "O
very well I guess, well enuf for me."
During her last
weeks of suffering she knew she could not be
with us long and on the morning the Lord called
her, she called for her darling baby, father,
mother, brother and sisters, kissed us all good
bye, to not grieve but to be comforted that she
was leaving us to go where there are no pains
and sorrow.
She told us the
things she saw, "her sister Pearl, the prettiest
places I ever saw." She said to us, "My you look
so sweet, sweeter than ever before." She asked
us to sing and she herself sang, "Nearer My God
to Thee and Jesus Lover of My Soul." These
songs and "Sweetly Resting" at her request were
sung at her funeral.
Besides the
husband, son, father, mother and four sisters,
one sister Pearl having died in July 1910, and
other relatives are heart broken and today mourn
her death.
She united with the
United Brethren Church at Bowers in February
1909. The services were conducted from there
Sunday morning, January 18, in charge of Rev.
G.I. Stine, the Potato Creek Choir did the
singing. Interment at the Lutheran Cemetery.
The Pall Bearers
were, Misses Gladys and Tine Hampton (cousins of
Flora), Thresa Bowen, Ethel Jones, Stella Kirk
and Opal Doty.
We have lost our
darling Flora,
She has bid us all
adieu,
She has gone to
live in Heaven,
And her face is lot to view,
O! that darling how
we loved her,
And how hard to
give her up,
But an angel came
down for her,

of 1-65, about one mile south of State Road 267.

driven about five miles in the wrong land,
forcing several cars off of the road, before
running into the front end of a semi-truck being
driven by David A. Williams, 30, 811 Campbell
Street, Lebanon, driver for Van Camp Hardware.
Williams said that he was in the right hand land
behind another car when it slammed on its
brakes, forcing Williams to swerve into the left
lane. Williams said he then saw Riley coming at
him and he tried to pull onto the median, but "I
just couldn't get away>" Abner, who was alone in
the car, was killed on impact, death due to a
skull fracture.

bystanders threatened the Marshall, who had

hitting Veach higher than the Marshall had
intended.

held Tuesday. Sheriff Robinson and State
Troopers who were called to the scene by
Marshall Davidson investigated the shooting.
A large crowd
gathered in the downtown section of Thorntown.

some time the crowd dispersed.
