JULIA CATHERINE STRONG December 23, 1868 in
Winamac, Pulaski County, Indiana, daughter of
WILLIAM STRONG and ELIZABETH KEENE. She was
born July 22, 1849 in Clay County, Kentucky, and
died August 07, 1940 in Thorntown, Boone County,
Indiana .

CIVIL WAR VET DIES WEDNESDAY --- JOE RANCE, 78,
HAS BEEN RESIDENT OF THORNTOWN FOR PAST 45 YEARS
Joe Rance, 78, Civil war Veteran answered the
final summons of the Great Commander Wednesday
afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at his home in the
southwest part of Thorntown. Death resulted from
a complication of disease after an illness of
short duration.
The funeral services will be held this afternoon
at 2 o'clock from the residence, Rev. Gillispie
of Indianapolis officiating. Interment will be
at maple Lawn Cemetery. A firing squad from the
Thorntown Post, American Legion, will give the
final salute at the grave.
Joe Rance was born in Pulaski County in 1846. At
the start of the Civil War, he enlisted and
served for two years under General Grant in the
30th Indiana Regiment. He removed to Thorntown
45 years ago and since that time has resided
here. The widow and five children survive. The
children are, Mrs. Ed Fisher, Mrs. Ora Sering,
Isaac, Amos and Will Rance, all of Thorntown.

DEATH TAKES MRS. JULIA RANCE --- ONE OF THE
COMMUNITY OLDEST RESIDENTS DIES WEDNESDAY NIGHT
Mrs. Julia Katherine Rance, one of Thorntown's
oldest residents, known to many as "Aunt Judy"
died at her home at 9:15 o'clock Wednesday
evening. Her death followed an illness of almost
a year.
Mrs. Rance was born in Clay County, Kentucky,
July 22, 1849 , the daughter of William and
Betty Keene Strong. She just recently celebrated
her 91st birthday, with all her children and
grandchildren spending the day at her home.
She was married to Josiah Rance in Winamac on
December 23, 1868 and to this union nine
children were born. Mr. Rance passed away in
1925. The deceased was a member of the Pilgrim
Holiness Church in Thorntown.
She is survived by five children, Mrs. Lida
Fisher, Mrs. Alberta Scering, Will Rance, Isaac
Rance and Amos Rance, all of this community, 25
grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and 10
great great grandchildren.
The body will be taken from the LaFollette &
Crain funeral home to the home this (Thursday)
evening and the funeral will be Saturday
afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Wesleyan Methodist
Church , with Rev. Bernard Greene in charge.
Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery in
Thorntown.

ISAAC RANCE DIES AT HOME --- WAS LIVE RESIDENT
OF BOONE COUNTY
Isaac Edward Rance, 68 years old native and life
resident of this county, died last night at his
home in Thorntown. He had been seriously ill
since March.
Mr. Rance was a fence builder and also did,
custom butchering. He was born July 22, 1883 ,
the son of Joseph and Julia Strong Rance and was
married in Indianapolis , August 8, 1936 . to
Nancy Bettcher who survives. he was a member of
the Nazarene Church at Frankfort .
Also surviving are a daughter Mrs. Dean
McDonald, Indianapolis , a brother Amos Rance, a
sister, Mrs. Lydia Fisher, both of Thorntown, 10
stepchildren and two grandchildren. A brother
and sister are deceased.
Services will be held at 2 P.M. , Saturday at
the Russell and Hitch funeral home in Thorntown
with the Rev. B.H. Garvin officiating. Burial
will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery . Friends may
call at the funeral home in Thorntown.

FUNERAL RITES HELD FOR MRS. DELLA RANCE
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday
afternoon in the Wesleyan Methodist for Della
Rance, whose death, Sunday night came after a
long period of ill health.
Mrs. Rance, who was 56 years of age, was born in
Monroe County , Indiana , the daughter of Noah
and Samantha Ann Kalie. Her marriage to Isaac
Rance occurred in Martinsville in 1903.
Mr. Rance and one daughter, Mrs. M. McDonald
survive. Three children are deceased. There is
also a brother James Kalie remains to mourn her
death. Mrs. Rance was a Member of the Pilgrim
Holiness Church.
The Rev. Mr. Knowles of Lafayette , officiated a
the funeral and burial was in Maple Lawn
Cemetery in Thorntown.

Mrs. Nancy Elizabeth Rance 91, longtime resident
of Thorntown passed away Thursday afternoon in
the Robert Long Hospital at Indianapolis , where
she had been a patient since July 13.
A Lebanon native, she was born December 24, 1875
the daughter of Elwood and Palina Purdue Scering.
Her first marriage in 1893 was to Oliver C.
Bettcher who is deceased. She was married to
Isaac Rance, who passed away in 1950.
Mrs. Rance, who was the last of her family was a
member of the Nazarene Church . Prior to moving
to Thorntown in 1936 she had lived in
Indianapolis for many years.
Surviving are: eight children, Mrs. Emma Pohl,
Mrs. Lucille McQueen, Mrs. Ruth Poynter and John
and Otto Bettcher all of Indianapolis, Mrs.
Helen Kolacek of Acton, Mrs. Henrietta Tucker,
Thorntown and the Rev. Roy A. Bettcher of
Chattanooga, Tennessee, 16 grandchildren and
numerous great-grandchildren. One son and a
daughter are deceased.
Burial will be in Marple Lawn Cemetery.

AMOS CLIFFORD RANCE DIES LAST NIGHT --- WAS A
BARBER IN COUNTY 20 YEARS
Amos Clifford Rance, 63 years old, a barber in
Thorntown and Lebanon the the past 20 years died
last night at Witham Hospital after a serious
illness of three weeks. He had been ill eight
months.
A life resident of Thorntown, Mr. Rance was
employed at the J.D. Adams Company in
Indianapolis before opening his barber shop.
He was born August 11, 1889 the son of Joe and
Catherine Strong Rance and was married in
Lafayette , November 15, 1915 to Hazel Smith who
survives. He was a member of the Eagle Lodge
here.
Also surviving are three children, Charles Rance
of near Greensburg , Mrs. Mary Zimmerman of
Route 6, and Guy Rance, Thorntown, and seven
grandchildren. Another son, Clarence, died in
1949. Six sisters and two brothers also are
deceased.
Services will be held at 2 P.M. , Monday in the
Russell and Hitch Funeral Home at Thorntown,
with the Rev. John Ray Clark in Charge. Burial
will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery at Thorntown.
Friends may call at the funeral home at 7
o'clock tonight.

Mrs. Hazel B. Rance, 68, resident of Thorntown
for 50 years passed away unexpectedly Thursday
afternoon in her home there following a heart
attack. She had been in poor health for several
years.
A Tippecanoe County native she was born May 6,
1898 , the daughter of Bartholomew and Catherine
Johnson Smith. On November 15, 1915 she married
Amos Rance who preceded her in death January 9,
1953.
Mr. Rance owned and operated the Rance Barber
Shop, in Lebanon , several years.
Mrs. Rance was active in Republican politics for
many years and a member of the Royal Neighbors
and Eagles Auxiliary at Thorntown. She was a
member of Thorntown Christian church and its
Dorcas Class.
Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Ervin Zimmerman,
Lebanon, two sons, Charles and Guy both of
Greensburg, three brothers, Lawrence and Minor
Smith of Clarks Hill and Guy Smith, Brookston,
two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Smith of Thorntown and
Mrs. Ewing Mason of Darlington. Also surviving
are eight grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren. Four brothers, one sister
and a grandson are deceased.

Notes for CHARLES EDWARD FISHER:
TRAGIC DEATHS IN AUTO WRECK --- EARL OSBORNE AND
ED FISHER ARE VICTIMS CHRISTMAS DAY
One of the most tragic accidents this community
in recent years occurred on the afternoon of
Christmas Day and resulted in the death of two
local men, Edward Fisher and Earl Osborne.
The two men in company with Jack Bennett, of
Indianapolis were riding in the Osborne coupe
west of here with Earl Osborne driving. Failing
to make the curve at a small bridge the car
crashed against an embankment and was badly
damaged.
Mr. Fisher was killed instantly while Mr.
Osborne was so seriously injured that his death
occurred on Saturday evening in the Witham
Hospital at Lebanon. Jack Bennett third occupant
of the car was only slightly injured.
Funeral rites for Mr. Fisher were conducted on
Sunday afternoon in the Wesleyan methodist
Church with the Rev. Arthur Personette
officiating. Burial was in Maple Lawn Cemetery.
On Tuesday afternoon in the Wesleyan Methodist
Church the funeral services for Earl Osborne
were held with the Rev. W. Edward Stokesberry
officiating. Military rites were also conducted
by the American Legion post. Burial was in Maple
Lawn.
OBITUARY
Charles Edward Fisher, son of Fred and Jane
Needham Fisher was born June 26th, 1872 and died
December 25th, 1938 at the age of 64 years, 5
months and 29 days. His departure came as tragic
shock to the community on Christmas Day.
He was united in marriage to Lydia Rance,
February 14, 1894 . To this union was born
twelve children, 9 of which survive.
Besides the widow, the children are, William, of
Chicago, Mrs. Maude Payne, Mrs. Ann Bennett,
Lawrence and Virgil, all of Indianapolis, Mrs.
Ethel Rice, Cass, homer and Vernie, all of
Thorntown, fifteen grandchildren, five great
grandchildren, also three brothers, Lon of
Morgantown, John, of Indianapolis, and Frank of
Thorntown.
OBITUARY
Earl Osborn, son of Squire and the late Ellen
Osborn, he was born in Fulton County , Missouri
, on April 3, 1892 and passed away December 26,
1936.
Soon after his birth he was brought by his
parents to this community in which he has lived
ever since.
On July 26, 1916 , he was united in marriage
with Miss Gertie Abney of Whitestown, who
survives him.
From June 24, 1917 until May 13, 1919 , he
served in the united States Army, sailing for
France on the first of September, 1917.
Besides his widow, he is survived by his aged
father, five brothers, Charles, Ben, George,
Haven, of Thorntown, and Harl of Indianapolis.
Several nephews and nieces also survive him.

Robert R. Rance, 47, of Indianapolis, who
resided in Thorntown until 1930, died at Robert
Long Hospital yesterday. He had been on poor
health for six years and seriously ill two
weeks.
Born in Boone County, January 24, 1909, he was
the son of William and Cordelia Williams Rance.
He was married on June 16, 1930, in Lebanon to
Lillian Strong who survives.
Mr. Rance moved to Indianapolis about 28 years
ago and for the past five years was and employee
of the William H. Block Co.
Besides the widow he is surviving by one son,
Carroll Rance, and a daughter, Janice, both of
Indianapolis, three brothers, Ivan Rance of
Marion, Herschel of Greensburg, and Leslie of
Indianapolis, two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Personette
and Mrs. Marie Kesler both of Indianpolis, and
on grandson. Two brothers are deceased.
Last rites will be held at the Russell & Hitch
funeral home in Thorntown on Sunday at 2:30 P.M.
with Rev. Floyd Metz officiating. Burial will be
at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown. Friends may
call at the Thorntown funeral home after 7
o'clock tonight.

LILLIAN L. RANCE MORT, FORMER RESIDENT OF
THORNTOWN DIES
Lillian L. Rance Mort, a former resident of
Thorntown, died Thursday, Feb. 10, at Grace
Village in Winona Lake. She was 89.
Born Jan. 16, 1911, in Thorntown, she was a
daughter of William Strong and Viola Veach. She
married Robert Rance in Lebanon on June 16,
1929. He died March 16, 1956.
Mrs. Mort had lived in Boone County until moving
to Indianapolis at the age of 19. She had worked
17 years as a cashier at William H. Block Co.
before retiring in 1971. She moved to Warsaw in
1975. She had enjoyed sewing, crocheting and
fishing.
Survivors are a son, Carroll Rance of
Plainfield, a daughter, Janice Routh of Warsaw,
a sister, Mary Fairfield of Three Rivers,
Michigan, seven grandchildren, 17 great
grandchildren and five great great
grandchildren. Also surviving is Connie Banta of
Crawfordsville, who had been raised in the
Mort's home.
Services will be 2 P.M. Monday in Thorntown. The
Rev. Alan Moody will officiate. Interment will
be at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown.
Calling at the funeral home will be from 1 to 2
P.M. Monday.
Memorials may be made to The Gideon's Memorial
Bible Association.
