Notes from Roberta P. Lewis, wife of Roy E. (McFatter) Lewis

It was after the funeral of Roy's grandmother Helen Beatrice Lane Smith that Cleo told me of the old family Bible and asked if we could do something to find out more about the family because of those names and dates, I told her I would do my best to see what I could do, and that is when I learned of Genealogy and began the research on this family, which has lead to  over the past 35 years or more of doing the family research on all of Roy's families, both maternal and paternal bloodlines, as well as research on my own family, which has led to Roy's membership in the Sons of the American Revolution through his James Lane, and of my becoming a member of the Daughters of the American Revolutionon my ancestor Adam Gillfillan, also having found out so much information on all of our families, had this old family Bible had not been found, I doubt I would have ever begun this search, which has taken up a great deal of my life and time over these many years, I hope I have left this information for all of the generations to come. I have tried to be accurate in all of my work, have checked and re checked my information, but as with all genealogy it is always a work in progress, and is never ending, to all of the generations to come that may read this, it is my hope you will find pride and pleasure of knowing your ancestors, stand tall and know you are part of the American History.

Sincerely,
Roberta P. Scarborough Lewis

Papers Received from Mr. Roy Lane Mosemiller:

Copy from  Marriages  Vol I 1796- 1837, Pg. 74: Lane, William to Sarah Hains, Aug. 23, 1801
William McPhetridge (bond only)
He sent copy of that original bond as well.
A note from a RLM says: (3) My reading of this date on the original bond is "23rd day of August A.D. 1801" (not 1802) But if that be not convincing enough notice their first child , Mary "Polly" Lane was born 17 July 1802. There is irrefutable evidence of that in other Lane Family records.

Note from Roberta Lewis:  Mr. Roy Lane Mosemiller has done a great deal of research on the Lane family and sent me a great deal of information much or most has been added to my Family Tree sheets, however I am going to copy from pages sent to me by Mr. Mosemiller below: It is long but most interesting and it is in his words and writing, so keep this in mind as you read the following:

WILLIAM LANE

Compiled by Roy Lane Mosemiller
August 10, 1982
(revised January 4, 1990)

"William Lane was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia on December 17, 1778.  He was the eldest son of James Lane.  I am uncertain of his mother's name. However, a James Lane married 26 March 1778 (consent of William Jack) Martha Jack in Botetourt County, Virginia.  I strongly suspect that there [sic: they?] were the parents and that William Jack was Martha's father.

William Lane had brothers and at least one sister.  One brother, John, when a young boy was stolen by Indians.  He returned to the Lane family when he was about nineteen years old. During his absence from them he told of having gone to England and back. Nothing is known by the writer about Williams other brothers or sisters, although it seems apparent that  another brothers name was James Lane, Jr.

William Lane came to Tennessee with his father sometime in the period 1784 to 1796.  They settled briefly in Sullivan County then finally in Grainger County in 1799. Here William married Sarah Haynes on August 22, 1801. To this marriage were born eleven children, six sons and five daughters. They were:

1) Mary Lane, born July 17,1802, married Peter Wwidner
2) Addison E. Lane, born July 4, 1804 married Sarah Dennis
3) Josiah C. Lane, born February 11, 1806 married 1st Minerva Tomlinson and 2nd Mrs. Nancy (Brock) Crutchfield
4) Lewis Lane, born January 6,1808 , married Emily Jackson
5) John Lane, born October 6, 1809, married Sarah Kennon
6) Elizabeth Lane, born August 5, 1811, married James G. Trout
7) James Lane, born April 11, 1813 and died when about 1-1/2 years old.
8) Levi H . Lane, born July 9, 1814, married Pheriba Hayes
9) Ruth Lane, born November 3,1815, married John Chesney
10) Rhoda Lane, born December 26,1817,married 1st John Hubbs and 2nd Jon W. Kennon
11) Anna Lane, born July 21, 1820 , who I think died young.

Apparently William and his father were always very close.  Together they bought a 500 acre tract of land in Grainger County.  It was situated on the north side of Clinch Mountain along the waters of Flat Creek and near the present town of Luttrell.  Today this land lies in Union County, a newer county which, in 1850 was formed out of parts of Anderson, Campbell, Claibourne, Grainger and Knox Counties. On this land they established farms and lived out their lives.

In 1808 William built a log house in which to raise his large family. This house stood for 111 years, but on March 18, 1919 it burned to the ground, long since having served its original purpose. On Williams farm he raised corn, wheat, flax, a few milk cows, sheep and hogs. It would seem, from the inventory of John Lane's estate, that the Lanes spun thread from the flax they raised. One of the items listed was a flax break. Then it seems reasonable to assume that this family used their linen and wool thread to weave a cloth of that day. It was called
linsey-woolsey and was much used for homemade wearing apparel.

William, besides farming, devoted thirty years of his life to public service. On November 20, 1811 he was commissioned by Governor Willie Blount as a Justice of the Peace for Grainger County. He was sworn in as an office of the Courtof Pleas and quarter Sessions on February 12, 1812.  During the early history of Tennessee these courts were composed of numerous justices and represented a decentralized government. Within their inclusive functions and
jurisdiction could be found most duty and authority which concerned a citizen with business to
transact with his government.

William Lane and his family were Baptists and belonged to that group known as Missionary Baptists who withdrew to form the so-called Northern Association in 1839.  At that time the family was affiliated with the Cedar Ford Church located near the Lane farm.

On November 27, 1845 William Lane was taken sick, and he died "on Thursday at precisely 12 o'clock, February the 19th 1846 - A kind and affectionate parent." His will dated September 22, 1841 left personal property to his wife and all real property, exclusive of dower and homestead to his son, John. As William explained in his will, "as I give the rest of my children their part when they left me."

William Lane is my great-great grandfather, and I am descended through his son, Josiah C. Lane. My grandfather Lane's name was Milroy, and I am named for him. Mother's maiden name was Ruby Bell Lane, and she was Milroy's youngest daughter."

Notes for RUTH LANE:

July 18, 2004

I spoke on the phone today to Wanda Wilmouth Hickle Waring, 7329 Shalimar Point, Knoxville, TN, 37918, and she said that Martha Jack the 1st wife of James Lane was taken by Indians and they believe they killed her as she was never again seen.  So no wonder we cannot find a death record of information on Martha Jack, she was killed or kidnapped by the Indians.

Wanda also told me that Ruth and John Chesney had 10 children she said that John Chesney had 3 children when they married and they had 10 children.  She also claims that they had 2 sons Levi and Gideon and they went to war and Gideon got sick with a fever of some kind perhaps Dyptheria  (not sure on that) anyway, his brother Levi went and found him and when he brought him home a colored nanny they had took care of him, both Levi and Gideon now had the fever, also the mother got it Ruth, and the black nanny, and then all 4 of them died from it.  All are buried in the Chesney's cemetery in Union County, Tenn."

Also note from Roy Mosemiller says:
"2 sons Civil war returned with Typhoid, gave it to Ruth and all 3 died." He says buried at Sharp Cemetery, Bull Run Rd., Union Co., Tenn.

Levi Lane was one of the most honored and respected citizens of Lebanon.  He was for many years connected with the office of circuit clerk, holding that office personally for several years, and was deputy under the second clerk of the circuit court - Samuel S. Brown, the first clerk of this court for Boone county having been David Hoover. Mr. Lane was a descendant from sterling English stock. His grandfather James Lane came from England at the age of fourteen years having run away from his parents, who lived in the city of London. He shipped on board a vessel for America, and at New York apprenticed to pay his passage money.  At the age of eighteen he was drafted into the colonial army and served throughout the Revolutionary war.  He married in Virginia, and, with his wife, shortly after moved to Grainger County, Tennessee, in which state Mr. Lane was one of the pioneers. He cleared up a good farm on Flat Creek and there passed the remainder of his days. To Mr. Lane and wife were born four children: William, James, Edward and one daughter, whose name is not remembered. He was a member of the Baptist church and well known throughout the county as a man of sterling worth. He reached the great age of eighty years. William Lane his son, the father of our subject, was born in Virginia, December 2, 1787, was taken to Tennessee by his parents and grew up among the pioneers of that state. He became a farmer and married Sarah Haines, who was born on February 14,1782. She was the daughter of David Haines, who was of Irish Stock. To Mr. and Mrs. Lane were born the following children: Polly, Addison, Josiah C., Louis, John, Ruth, Levi, Ann, Rhoda , and one who died an infant. They are all deceased and all left families. William Lane was a substantial farmer, owning two hundred acres of land. He was appointed by the state legislature justice of the peace, and served continuously for forty years, his judgment being respected by all who knew him.  At an early day he served as a soldier in the Indian troubles. He died on his farm February 19, 1845, aged sixty-eight years. He was a man of honorable character and a typical American pioneer. Levi Lane, his son, was born July 9, 1815, on his father's farm in Grainger county Tennessee, twenty-two miles north of Knoxville. He was reared a farmer and left home at the age of twenty-five years. He had received a good common school education for his day and taught a subscription school two winters. In 1840 the day after the election of William H. Harrison to the presidency, he left his old home for Boone county, Indiana. His brother Josiah, accompanied him. He was a man of family and had already settled in Boone county but had been home on a visit. Levi Lane had just taken an active part for his age and position in the famous "Log Cabin and Hard Cider" campaign, in which the excitement had run very high, the war cry being "Tippecanoe and Tyler, too." On the first day of the journey the brothers passed the famous chestnut tree where the three states - Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky-meet. Here had been held a political rally and the flag still waved in shreds from the top of a tree. The woods nearby were filled with cider barrels, from which the hard cider had freely flowed to quench the thirst and cause the enthusiasm in the celebrated campaign. Mr. Lane came directly to Lebanon, making the journey of four hundred miles on horseback in three weeks, arriving here in November. Four brothers of the Lane family settled in Boone county, three of them, Addison, Josiah C., and Lewis came from Putnam county, where they had settled between 1830 and 1832.  They are now deceased. In the May following his arrival, in 1840, Levi Lane and his brother, Addison and family returned to the old home in Tennessee for a visit. Levi Lane returned to Lebanon in September 1841 and from that time until his death remained permanently. On the next day after his arrival, in September, 1841, he entered the office of county clerk as deputy and continued in this position two and one-half years. Mr. Brown, the clerk, being succeeded by John Chrisman, who resigned his position, Mr. Lane was elected to fill his unexpired term and served by appointment and election six and one-half years. He was then deputy under subsequent clerks until late in the nineties, with the exception of eight years. During this long period of more than forty-five years he made more court records than any man in the state of Indiana; and issued more marriage licenses, as he had served in the clerk's office for a longer period than any other man in the state. His records were accurate and very legible and now of great value. Mr. Lane married on August 23,1842, Pheriba Hayes, daughter of Charles Hayes, of Illinois. To Mr. and Mrs. Lane were born ten children: Henry S., Clara L., Empson T., Willard W., Samantha E., Joseph B., Nellie L., Albert L., Morris E., and Georgiannna, who died an infant, all born in Lebanon, and this is the proper order of their birth. Both Mr. and Mrs. Lane were members of the Methodist church, of which he was one of the trustees and also steward, and for forty years was secretary of quarterly conferences and board of stewards. Politically, he was a staunch Republican; he was a strong Union man during the war, in which he had two sons, Henry S., and Empson T. Henry S. was in an Indiana infantry regiment and served during the war. He was in the battle of Pittsburg Landing and in the gunboat service and hospital steward and paymasters clerk. Empson T. was in an Indiana regiment and in seven skirmishes. Mr. Lane was one of the Union men in the country and was universally respected. Mr. Lane passed away several years ago and the name of this grand old pioneer will long remain in the memory of the citizens of Boone county.

Note from Roberta regarding the above article: Believe there is an error when he referred to Sarah Haines as being daughter of David Haines, from our research this is not correct. Not sure where that information came from, but typed it as it was written, word for word.
