Business Directory - 1874

This database excerpted from, "The People's Guide, A Business, Political and Religious Directory of Boone County Ind." 1874, will give you a tremendous amount of information about your Boone County ancestors in 1874. You'll be able to learn their occupations, residence, birth information, political and religious affiliation and the year of settlement in Boone County.

Unfortunately, we currently only have transcripts for Perry and Union Townships from this publication. If you have access to this book and would transcribe other townships for us, we would be very grateful!

Perry Township

Perry Township is located in the southeast quarter of the county, one township from the east line, and bordering on the south line. It is a small township, containing only twenty-one square miles; it lies in a square, except four sections out of its northeast corner, which belong to Worth township. The land in Perry township is generally very level; the soil is good, but will require a large amount of ditching before it can be brought into a high state of cultivation. The timber is very good and plentiful, with considerable underbrush. The improvements of the township are primary representing partially the early settlements of the country. The little "log cabin" and "truck patch" are visible in many places; time, however, will undoubtedly make of the wilderness a land of great plenty. The public roads are not of the best, neither are they very plenteous in number. No railroad runs through this township. Fayette, in the south part, has some very good business houses.

The people of the township are honest, sociable, and well disposed toward strangers. Streams of water are scarce, and of diminutive capacity.

THEOLOGICAL
Christian Church, Fayette; membership: 50; value of property: $500.
There are other churches in Perry township, but owing to the absence of parties who were able to give proper information to our agents concerning them, we are necessarily compelled to omit giving their names, etc.; however, we are informed that the township is very well supplied with the means for moral instruction.

There are seven school houses in Perry township, valued at about $4000. Eli SMITH is the present Township Trustee. The vote of the township is nearly 400, being largely Democratic.

GRANGES
Fayette Grange; Patrick JOHNSON, Master: Jno. K. EDWARDS, Overseer; J. M. CRANE; membership: 60.

White Lick Grange; J. H. SCHOOLER, Master; membership: 87, located one and a half miles north-west of Royalton.

Union Township

Union Township, Boone County, contains twenty-five square miles, or fifteen thousand acres of land. It lies on the east line of the county, and is bounded on the north by Marion township, on the west by Worth and Center, and on the south by Eagle. It would require five sections of land out of Worth township to make Union township square. Northfield is the only town in the township, and it is located in the neighborhood of its center; the town is not large but its inhabitants are intelligent and industrious. The township has no railroad; Whitestown, in Worth township, being the nearest railroad station. It is located on the I., C. & L. R. R. The township is abundantly timbered with a valuable variety of oak, ash, walnut, hickory, maple, poplar, etc. Many thousands of staves are annually shipped, or hauled out of the township. Although this is a small township, it stands well up with others of the county for enterprise, both private and public. There are many good and well improved farms to be seen in the southern part, and quite a goodly number in the northern. The township is watered by the "Big Eagle," and its branches. The public improvements are good, especially the school houses, of which there are eight in number, valued at $6,500.
