Oliver Craven
OLIVER CRAVEN.
Mr. Craven, one of the early settlers of Thorntown, was born
in Randolph County, N.C., June 1, 1812. Came here in the
year 1833, and where he has since resided. He was first
married to Rebecca Talsey, January 1, 1838. In 1837 he was
elected justice of the peace, and as such has acted for over
forty-three years, perhaps the longest time of any man in
the county. Joined the M. E. Church in 1837, and has acted
with and been a member of that church ever since. The
following children were born to him and his first wife:
Alice M., Caroline M., Jason L., Nancy E. and Nathan J.
Three are deceased; one resides in Minnesota, and one in
Chicago, Ill. Mr. C. was the second time married, this time
to Susan Pauly, on December 19, 1849. Names of their
children: Sarah F., Ella, Mary A., Delilah A., Oliver M.,
William and Laura B. Two of the above died in infancy. Mr.
C. having served the people as justice of the peace so long
is enough to convince all of his fidelity and integrity. He
has served as president of the Old Settlers’ Meetings at
Thorntown three years.
