Helt Township Land Abstracts/Entries
I am looking for Land Abstracts or a Tract/Entry Book for
Helt Township in the 1820's to 1830's. I live in Ohio and
have asked for help from the Court House and an employee at a
library. I was willing to pay but no one responded or
replied.
Thank you,

Collom Family
I am
researching my husband's family (Collom) His father and mother were
divorced in1943
and he was raised by his father & had little to no contact with
his birth mother. Their marriage produced my husband (Donald)
in 1941
and his sister Joyce Collom Laws in 1939. Joyce and her three
children
died in a tragic house fire in 1974 in Cayuga, IN. Ruth Price
(Collom) married
John White and their marriage produced a daughter, Carolyn or Caroline,
who married a man
with the surname Marshal or Marshel or Marshall. I am trying
to contact Carolyn or
find out where she may be to complete my husband's maternal side of his
family. Any help or resource information you can give will be
greatly appreciated
as the majority of the relatives that had any knowledge of Ruth Price
(Collom) White
or her daughter are now deceased.

Hutchinson Family
I have a
great, great, great grandmother named Susannah Hutchinson who is listed
in the 1820
U.S. Census, Vigo County and the 1830 U.S. Census for Vermillion County
IN. She
has been transcribed by one person as Jeremiah Hutchinson in the 1820
Vigo Census.
She is buried in the very old part of Helt's Cemetery. I have
a picture of the stone
with her name and date of death. She was born 1780 in
possibly Vermont and died April of 1830 in Helt's Prairie,
Indiana.
She is not only a true "Pioneer of Indiana", but the mother of one of
your noted
citizens, Volney Hutchinson who married Mary Jane Armstrong
(Denehie).
Volney had a sister named Viola who married Thomas Aldridge or
Oldridge.
We have been
looking for the name of Volney's father for a number of
years. Volney was orphaned at 12 years of age and apprenticed
out to
become a carpenter. We are unable to locate a court record or
any
information concerning Volney's father.

Kaufman Family
I am trying
to track down the wife of a physician in Newport who left her husband
and children
for my great-grandfather. Anyone have a clue as to who the woman might
have been?
Apparently she lived with my great-grandfather in Missouri until she
passed away, probably
in the 1940s. My great-grandfather was Frank Forest Kaufman, who died
in 1952.
If anyone has any ideas, please contact me so we can complete our
genealogy. Thanks.

Vermillion Co. in
the 1820's and 30's. John Billings (my 4th great grandfather) was
married to Anna and they
had 8 children, William, Elijah, John, Joal, Archibald, David, Phebe

Lewis Phebus
Sr. had several siblings, one being my ancestor, Samuel. Samuel
migrated to
Pickaway County, Ohio where he lived the remainder of his life. One of
his sons, James,(born
abt. 1798) subsequently married Sarah??? and they had six children.
James met
with a premature death (1837)in Pickaway County and Sarah took the
children and moved
to Vermillion County,IN abt 1838 where she resided on property owned by
her brother-in-law,
Lewis. She is on the 1840 census report. I cannot confirm if all her
children were
with her but believe they were.
The next
record I can find is 1850 where she is residing in White County, IN and
in 1852 she
and her eldest son, Silas, Purchase land-grants in White County. Any
help in filling in the
blanks is appreciated. I do not know if she ever owned property in
Vermillion County. Lewis
was a landowner in Fountain and Vermillion Counties. Thanks

Peckenpaugh
I found
Soloman Peckenpaugh in the 1840 census Vermillion Indiana County
Eugene.This could be my Great
Great Grandfather. Is there any way to find out who the members of his
family were
then. They were not listed in this census. I also found a Peckinpaw in
the 1930 census.
This could be the same Peckenpaugh different spelling.I know that he
had a son Frank
born about 1852 or 1853.I could sure use some help on Soloman
Peckenpaugh .My family
can trace back to Frank who married Betty Larkins from Indiana but that
is it.
Through the years I remember hearing some of my elders say that Soloman
just disappeared.

Bear, Lott
I am trying
to learn more about my great grandmother and her parents.
The 1860
census has David Bear, wife Clarissa and their daughters (including my
gg Harriett)
in Eugene. At the time they were farmers. The 1870 census has Clarissa
living in Perryville
with Harriet(missing one T) and Alice. Clarissa, then is a factory
worker, and Harriet,
at 18, a domestic servant.I am curious as to what type of factory would
be in Perryville
in 1870. Perhaps the father was lost in the Civil War...I have not
determined that.
Anyway, anyone searching BEAR family members in Vermillion County would
have my
interest, as well as the LOTT family. Harriett married Isaac Newton
Lott in Eugene.

Spouse was
Edward? Reinhart. This was in 1936, I do not know if there were other
spouses. Family
information, from now deceased relatives, says she died without

the correct date

Lyday, Rush, Carroll, Farris
I am looking
for the parentage of Benjamin Franklin Lyday. My records, which came
from Benjamins
grandson, show his birth as 6 September 1822 in Philadelphia, PA. and
was buried
in the Hopkins Cemetery in Vermillion County, Indiana sometime after
1861. He was
married to Vesta Ann Rush in 1844. She died in 1862 and was buried on a
farm in Clinton,
Vermillion, IN. They raised 9 children in Clinton: Sara A. (Jane) Lyday
born in 1846,
Mary Francis 1848, Daniel Webster 1849, Mariah (Maria) E. 1850, William
Thomas 1852,
Martha Kate 1857, Armanda Josephine 1858, Anna 1860, and John 1861.
John died
in 1862 at an age of 9 months. The 1850 census shows shows Benjamin,
Vesta, Sara,
Mary, and Daniel living in Clinton (it also reports Benjamin as being
30 years old, where
my records would have as 28 or 29). This census also records their last
name as Lidy.
On the internet, I can find no record of a Hopkins Cemetery in
Vermillion County.
I am
specifically interested in his death date, cause of death, verification
of his birth date, and
identification of his parentage.
I am also
interested in data on Charity Carroll born in Clinton, Vermillion, In 4
Jul 1848 and
her parents Benjamin Franklin Carroll and Elizabeth Farris. Charity
married Daniel Webster
Lyday 11 Aug 1868 in Terre Haute.

Trying to
find info on Jennie BARNARD, who was born Aug 10, 1848 in Vermillion
Co., Indiana.
I have no
knowledge of her parentage. She was apparently sent to live with some
relatives in
Illinois at a very young age. Unknown if both of her parents
died or if her mother did and father was unable to care for her? Jennie
is
the 3rd GGrandmother of my children, and 2nd
GGrandmother of my husband.
Does the county have birth or death records in the year 1848? Does
anyone have
access to any sources that might be able to help me? I would appreciate
any leads you
can give.

Howard
My Great-grandparents, Elkanah Hamilton HOWARD and his wife, Mary DENTON,
moved to Vermilion Co., Helt
Twp., in 1829 or 1830 and moved to Putnam Co., MO, where they died, in
about 1857
or 1858. Several of their children were married in Vermillion Co., but
I can only
account for what happened to about half of their children. I have my
complete line through
their son, John Wesley HOWARD, who was married in Putnam Co., MO, to
Martha Jane White.
Elkanah's
brother, John HOWARD and his wife Margaret DENTON, moved to Vermilion,
maybe at the same time as
Elkanah and Mary moved. They had lived in Washington Co., TN, before
removing to Indiana.
I'm interested in contacting anyone researching in either of these
families.

Manly, Manley
We are
looking for males of the Manley/Manly family lines, who are interested
in participating
in creating a Manley/Manly DNA family tree. The "Y" chromosome markers
not only provide information on
common ancestors, but how many generations back that ancestor was.
This project
will help to scientifically establish any common ancestors amongst the
US lines
and any possible ties to the family lines abroad.
As of Nov
2003 we have 12 members from other Manly/Manley families. My
DNA represents
the Manley/Manly lines that were in Vermillion County IN, from abt 1815
to 1860's.
William [married Elizabeth Nickels and Rachel Wallis], an original
homesteader, [SW
1/4, Sec 6, TW 16N, R9W .. dated 20 Feb 1824] and children, Garlington
[married a Rachel
Carmack], Archibald [married a Polly Capps], Mary [Married John Moore],
Edmund
[married Susanna Everly], Jemima [married Curtis Capps],
William (Jr) [married Manerva Ingram], Eliza [Harrison Jaggers],
Stephen,
Margaret, James and Rebecca Ann. Soon, we will have one or
two more
from the William [Jr]
line.
In order to
have a more accurate picture of these family lines it would be ideal to
have more
participation in the project. If you are
interested in learning more about this project, including the testing
process, fees and
security measures or if you would like to begin a surname project of
your own, please visit

Judd, Reid, Barnes
I am looking
for names of children for Kenneth Judd and Helen Reid Judd.. In Dec
1948 Thelma
Waymire Judd Barnes died in Vigo Co., IN and this is Kenneth's mother.
It listed Kenneth
as living in Cayuga, IN. Kenneth Judd married Helen Reid Oct
18 1940 Vigo Co.,
IN. Kenneth was born Apr 3, 1917 and died Sep 1987 Kennesaw,
Cobb Co., GA. Helen was born Feb 14 1920. I know
they
had children because in the obit for his mother and father it listed
grandchildren and he was the only child born from the marriage of his
parents and being the oldest
and the dates.. it had to be him that had the child.. or most likely to
be. I know
when Fred Judd his father died it listed one son Kenneth and
grandchildren survived.. Can
anyone help me in locating names of their children?

Newport Query
I am trying
to find out how Newport got the name Newport?
My family
(Barker) has lived in Vermillion County since the early 1800s and when
I try to connect
them to the Barkers in the US in the 1600/1700s I find a lot
of Barkers living in Newport,
RI. If Newport Indiana was named after Newport, RI this may
give me hope for a
connection between the 1600/1700 Barkers and the early 1800 Barkers
in Vermillion county
