WHITCOMB, SMITH
I'd like to correspond with anyone researching the WHITCOMB and SMITH families of Tippecanoe Co., who later moved to Clinton Co., Indiana.   Asa WHITCOMB, b 1790 Stockbridge, Vermont, married Hannah SMITH b 1808 Hamilton Co., Ohio. They married c1826 in Hamilton Co., Ohio, and came to Tippecanoe Co., Indiana right after their  marriage. Asa was the son of John & Lydia (PARMENTER) WHITCOMB. Hannah was the dau. of Edward & Elizabeth SMITH. Edward SMITH came to Tippecanoe Co. with brothers Abraham & Isaac SMITH.   I believe Edward had a son, John SMITH, and probably other children.

PITZER
AGNES PATRICIA PITZER SCHENK BREEDEN, born 16 Mar 1905, Dayton, Tippecanoe County, IN; died 13 Feb 1998 at The Lawrence Manor Healthcare Facility, Indianapolis, IN.

Ralph Emerson and Cleo (McDaniel) Breeden, (first wife,) had one son, Paul Dale Breeden, born 8 Aug 1930, New Albany, IN. I am he, and am seeking the names of my stepmother's (AGNES PATRICIA PITZER SCHENK BREEDEN) parents and adoptive parents or any family members.  Agnes married my father, Ralph Emerson Breeden 6 May 1950, Jeffersonville, Clark County, IN. They had no children.

Ralph Emerson Breeden, born 21 Sept 1904, Leavenworth, IN; died 9 Aug 1983, Indianapolis, IN. I am his only child.   Agnes gave me some genealogy history in 1995, but unfortunately, it was incomplete. She said that the Pitzers came to America from Germany during the Revolutionary War and settled in Virginia. Zionsville, IN, was settled by Virginians and North Carolinians. The Pitzers came from Virginia. Her father was born in Boone County, KY and was of German and American Indian descent. Agnes said she was related to the families of McCabe, Courtney and O'Hara.  (She said she was related to Cardinal O'Hara.)

She told me that she was born in Dayton, IN, but also that the PITZERs lived in Zionsville, IN. She did not tell me her parent's names or the names of her adoptive parents, other than Schenk. Agnes told me that her parents died when she was a little child and she was adopted by a family named SCHENK, when she was about 13 years old. Mr.SCHENK owned a store and gave up his business to become an itinerant preacher in the Primitive Baptist Church.

Agnes worked as an Aide in Witham Hospital, Lebanon, IN when she was young, for sometime, and wanted to become a nurse. However, that dream didn't come true. She lived in Pittsboro and commuted by bus to her job in Indianapolis, before she was married to my father. She met my father after World War II, when they were both employed at L.S. Ayers Dept. Store, Indianapolis, IN.
They were married in 1950 and lived in Pittsboro, IN. In 1971 my father and Agnes bought a house at 1725 Sharon Ave., Indianapolis, IN and she lived there until she died in 1998. My father died in 1983.

I hope someone reading this query is researching the Pitzer or Schenk families, and may be able to give me the names of Agnes' parents and adoptive parents. Thank you.

BURNS, CASEY
According to the state library's genealogy website listing of pre-1850 marriages, William Burns married Mary Casey on June 23, 1840 in Tippecanoe County.  I think they may have been my gg-grandparents, and would like to find out more information about these people.  Are they the same William and Mary Burns who were in Logansport later in the 1840s?  This is what I'm trying to determine.  Are there any likely sources of details on these people and their marriage in Tippecanoe County?  Any ideas appreciated!

CRAPP, KRAP
I would like to add the family name "Crapp" to your Tippecanoe surname list. It's the familyname of a great great granduncle of my wife who emigrated to Lafayette in 1847.  The original Dutch name was "Krap". This uncle was the leader of a group of families who left from the northern part of the province of Friesland. An english transcript of the letters he send home of his journey to and arrival in Lafayette are at the Tipcoa library. My wife and I visited there in 1984. We still would like to find out if there are still descendants of him surviving. He himself died in a few years, most of his children married in Lafayette.

The only son I know anything of is Peleg (Jr.) b.1842 in Lafayette,  who joined the Indiana Volunteers in 1863.  After the Civil War he returned to his wife Betty ZANE in Lafayette to open a candy business.  He also sold candy at fairs.  For unknown reasons he returned to NY state and died in 1898 by falling of a bridge while drunk.

I'm over at the Lawrence Co., Tn. GENWEB page if you need any info here.

Thanks. Reita

PETERS
George B. McClellan PETERS b. 7 Feb 1861 to John or Jon & Ellen (?) PETERS, d. 29 Mar.1942 in Iowa. Birth place is Lafayette, Tippecanoe, Ind. and left to Iowa as young man.  Dont know if parents went or not.   Possibly could have one sister, however, unable to locate in census.   Does any one know this family?  Will share info that I have since I am a descendant.  Like to know if parents immigrated from foreign country or origin of the name if possible.  I am the only one that I know that is working on this line, no living relatives will not give info or remember the events that lead to his leaving Ind. to Iowa.  Kathy Orozco

CLARK, SMITH,  BIRDSALL, BRANSON
Seeking info on my g g gparents, HIRAM CLARK,  b. 1803, place unknown, d. 11 Nov 1886, Oxford, Benton Co, IN.  Mentioned in "History of Benton County and Historic Oxford", Jesse Setlington Birch, 1928  as living in Oxford in 1882. HIRAM married HARRIET WHITE SMITH, 16 Aug 1827 in Tippecanoe Co, IN. This info from Indiana Archives Marriages Before 1850.  No further info on Harriet. This info from the LUNDY FAMILY book, 1902. Possibly they were Quakers who migrated west. Hiram and Harriet had 2 children that I know, Milton Lee Clark,  who married Anna Catherine Birdsall, d/o Daniel Birdsall, a Quaker minister and Gulielma Willson Birdsall, and Nancy Jones Clark who married David B. Branson.  Found the Daniel Birdsall family on the 1850 Census for Benton Co, IN.  There was at one time a Branson Farm north of Oxford.  Any info greatly apreciated.

NOLAN/NOLEN/NOLAND/NOLIN
Seeking info on: Edward NOLAN/NOLEN/NOLAND/NOLIN, born ~1798 VA, grew up in Ohio, moved to Indiana by 1836-1837, presumed died before 1860. I believe that he married several times.
Jefferson County, Ohio Marriage
Edward  NOLAND to Amelia PERRY on  20 Sep 1820.
Vermillion Co. Indiana Marriages:
Vier PARISH  to  Edward NOLAN  on 30 Jan 1843.
(I believe that this "Vier Parish" could be Survier Parish, widow of Meredith Parish from Ross Co. OH).
Tippecanoe Co. Indiana Marriages:
Edward NOLAN to  Lydia BROWN on  06 June1848 ( the same Edward NOLAN?)

I have not found Edward and Survier/Vier  Nolan on any census.  Perhaps she died before his marriage to Lydia Brown in 1848?  I can't find any cemetary records for that name or time frame.  Or was Vier Parrish, (she is listed as "Miss" on the marriage record),  a daughter of Survier and Meredith Parish and married a son Edward Nolan? I don't think that there were any State of Indiana Census taken between 1840-1850.  Sure wish I could find something which listed the ages of the couple above.  Perhaps they moved to another state.  I'm going to keep looking for them!  I have not found any Edward NOLAN on any 1840 Indiana census, but he may have been there because:

1850 Tippecanoe Co. Indiana US Census
Edward NOLEN  58  M  Farmer  VA
Lydia         40  F          OH
Clark         20  M          "
Alexander     18  M          "
Marcus        14  M          "
Henry         13  M          IN(moved to IN by 1836/1837)
Edward         1  M          " (child of last marriage?)

Another remote possibility is that the above older sons are all Lydia's from her first marriage and that they were adopted by Edward NOLAN. Another Nolan researcher  has found on the 1860 US Census that Lydia (Brown) (Nolan) has remarried to an E. Thompson, so Edward is presumed to have died in the 1850's. And the young son Edward NOLAN is living with the Thompson family. I have no verification of this, and I  need to search the census records. By the 1860 US Census, Clark, Alexander and Marcus NOLAN are now married and living near Thomas NOLAN  in Vermillion Co. Indiana. Any help is greatly appreciated!   :)   Susan

HOCKARD, HOOKER, HOCKARS, DAHM
I am working a family known as HOCKARD, HOOKER, HOCKARS [various spellings]. They show on the 1860 census in Tippecanoe Co. At lease one dau. married in Tippecanoe Co. and is buried in a cemetery there. One son enlisted into the U.S. Army for the Civil War from Lafayette. At this point, however, it's still "puzzle piecing time."   The family married into the DAHM family. I have a photo up of the son who served in the Civil War.  Thanks!
