April 2- Th e Putnam County Grand Jury
today returned an indictment in open court accusing the county sheriff, JohN T.
Sutherlin of “entering into, and carrying out a conspiracy … to violate the
laws of Indiana relating to gambling.”
The indictment was one of seven returned today by the Grand Jury after a
two weeks’ session but only the charges against the law enforcement official
were open. The open indictment named a Greencastle Liquor Store proprietor as
an associate of Sheriff Sutherlin in the alleged activities. However names of
the other six indicted will not be made public until after their arrest. Some
of the remaining indictments are expected to relate to charges of gambling in
Putnam County. Sheriff Sutherlin was ordered to appear before Judge John Allee
of the Putnam County Circuit Court April 13. The indictment returned against
Sheriff Sutherlin alleges he “unlawfully and designedly prostituted the office
of Sheriff of Putnam County.” It charges
him “entering into and caryring out a conspiracy to violate the laws of Indiana
relating to gambling and by participate in, initiating, and performing such
acts with intent, design and purpose of he himself engaging unlawfully in
gaming enterprises.”
