Stable Burnings

Source: Greencastle Star 3 April 1880 p 4

Last Wednesday morning about 2 o’clock the fire department was called out, the alarm being caused by the burning of a large stable on west Seminary street, owned by Dr. Goldsborough of Terre Haute and rented by Dr. Taylor. The fire was fierce and aggressive and before the department got to work the stable on the lot adjoining owned by Dr. Fisher was also a mass of seething and roaring flames.  Notwithstanding the amount of water thrown by the steamer, both building were entirely destroyed and considerable effort was necessary to prevent the further spread of the conflagration.  Dr. Taylor lost a carriage, sulky, corn planter and other property, upon which there was no insurance.  There was insurance on the stables to the amount of $700 which will probably cover the cost.  The fire was undoubtedly the work of incendiaries.
