“Floyd Twp” -- The 44th anniversary of the
marriage of John S. and Mary E. Millman was celebrated at their residence on
Jan 16 by their friends and relatives. The weather being very inclement for
such an occasion the attendance was small, though what were present were
treated to fine apples and sweet cider. The dinner was prepared under the
guidance of their daughter, Mrs. Tamer Huber. After the reading of Ecclesiastes
III, 1-9 all were invited to partake of the bountiful repast, consisting of
fine cakes, dressed fowl, and good things too numerous to mention prepared by
Mrs. Huber. Mr. and Mrs. Millman were placed at the head of the table while the
guests took their respective places around the table, and listed to the old
time stories told by Mr. Millman, while dinner was being served. Mr. and Mrs.
Millman were married at the bride’s parents, Moses and Charlotte Lewis, now
deceased, by Rev. Charles Hunter. In
this township Jan 16, 1845 by Rev. Charles Hunter, deceased. They began life
with no capital except what nature had provided. By their economy, they are now
reaping the reward of their industry.
Mr. Millman having learned the trade of making hats, at an early day,
under the instructions of his father John Millman, deceased acquired the habit
of buying fur which he has followed ever since, hence the name “John the
fur-buyer.” He has been a life long
Republican, served nearly four years in the late war and came out without a
bullet mark. They are the parents of 3 children, two of whom survive them, Mrs.
Tamer Huber and Montgomery Wade, the other having died 22 years ago. They have
led very industrious and peaceable lives, having gained the respect of all who
know them. Among the guests were Lawrence Smith and wife, Spencer C. Millman
and wife, Jacob Millman and wife, Simpson Evans, wife and three sons, James
McBay and wife, Melvin Greenlee, George W. Smitz, John W. Iddings and Arthur
Millman. The day having been spent very pleasantly all took their departure to
their respective homes wishing the venerable couple many happy days.
Same page under “Floyd Township” – Although it rained hard
Wednesday about 15 neighbors and friends gave Uncle John Millman and wife a
happy surprise. After the guests began
to gather in, with well-filled baskets, Mr. Millman and wife remembered it was
the 44th anniversary of their wedding. Willing hands soon spread a
well-laden table, which groaned under the weight of the good things of the
land. After dinner an evening of social enjoyment was indulged in. Mr. Millman
and wife are still enjoying comparatively good health. When the guests departed
they wished their host and hostess many happy anniversaries of their wedding.
