In the city
police court yesterday morning Judge Stubbs rendered a righteous judgment when
he fined Abe Long $100 and sent him to the work house for 180 days. Long, who
is a burly brute for several months has lived at the home of his mother, a
quiet old lady, who has supplied a shelter and the tenderest care for the child
of her scapegrace son for more than six months. Long came home Sunday “drunk
and dressed up” and began an outrageous assault upon his married sister, Mrs.
Mary May whom he threw with force to the floor of the kitchen. The aged mother,
who works at the shoe-bench of her dead husband, sprang forward to interfere
and was caught in the grasp of her brutal son and thrown across the body of her
daughter. Mrs. May then attempted to flee to a place of safety and was knocked
down in the yard by her brother, who struck her over the head with an iron
poker and then attempted to stamp her in the face as she lay on the ground. The
cowardly vagabond had nothing to say in court and passed out into the coop
without turning his attention to his old mother, who sat back in a remote
corner of the court room sobbing as if her heart would break. - transcribed by kbz
