Griffin, George - bass hunt - Putnam

Mr. Geo. Griffin left today for the Tippecanoe River on his annual bass hunt. He took four rods (not poles) a hundred or so lines and hooks and a minnow box as big as a wash boiler. The Banner-Times will gladly publish the reports of Mr. Griffin’s catch if he will send them to us by mail each day.

George W. Griffith returned from the Tippecanoe on Thursday and brought with him the handsomest string of bass that has been seen in these parts for a long, long time.  Mr. Griffith spent two weeks on the Tippecanoe a few miles from Monticello, which has been the scene of a number of marvelous achievements in the piscatorial line by the above named gentleman.  The river is noted for its large fish of all kinds and in its clear depths the black bass reaches noble dimensions.  Mr. Griffith’s string had on it 32 of the largest sized bass, the average being between 2-3 and a half pounders.  Some of them went as high and 3 and 3/4s.  They were all caught with bait as the water is now too clear for a fly and were place in a live-box until they were needed.  Mr. Griffith notwithstanding the large number captured in addition to those brought home, says he had poor luck.  How many poor, striving disciples of the gentle art would be crazed by even a small portion of his captures.   ~~~transcribed by kbz
