Fight in the Saloon - 1890

Source: Greencastle Banner 16 Jan 1890 p 5

There was a fight at Vancleave & Strother’s saloon on the north side of the square Monday night in which Ol Cummings, of Quincy cut Bud Marksberry the bartender a gash across the forehead and in return received a severe pummeling.  Cummings was arrested but for some reason the police sought to hush the matter up and it was not generally known yesterday – kbz

Ol Cummings the man who assaulted Bud Marksberry was fined $5 and costs by the Mayor this morning.  There was no evidence of any cutting.  Cummings went to jail for 15 days.  – kbz

Bud Marksberry, the barkeeper for Vancleave & Strother, who was cut over the head by Ol Cummings on last Monday is lying dangerously ill apparently at the Grand Central Hotel.  He is unable to move his limbs and seems to suffer considerable pain.  It is feared the wound on his head which was considered slight may have developed a serious turn.  – kbz

On page 5 one light notes that “Bud Marksberry is improving.”  – kbz
