Corrected
Statement – J.W. Farrow having published a statement in reference to me, I wish
to make public the following information direct from Putnam County, Indiana
where we both resided and where he, JW Farrow was deputy county treasurer under
his father … James HC Harrah
Greencastle,
Ind Sept 20th 1895 – Mr. Harrah – Dear Sir: It is not true that RS
Farrow was defaulter to Putnam County, Indiana. In settling with the auditor of
Putnam County, he, auditor, failed to charge Farrow up with $1,200 OR ABOUT
THAT MUCH MONEY. It was found after some months when I had the office. Mr. Farrow made it good. Yours truly, HH Hillis
Greencastle,
Ind Sept 28th, 1895 – Mr. JHC Harrah: Your letter at hand and will
say as to RS Farrow’s honesty as treasurer of Putnam County; I know nothing
from myy personal knowledge. Though Richard Gelispie states to me that it cost
his father from 6 to 8,000 dollars as bondsman for RS Farrow while treasurer of
Putnam County. – Alfred Watson

Gordon, Kansas
Sept 2, 1895 – There has been a statement circulated by one James HC Harrah, a
personal enemy of mine, derogatory to the memory of my father. And there has
been a statement furnished me by RL Randel, an ex-auditor of Putnam County,
Indiana, the officer to which the county treasurer makes his settlement. Yours, JW Farrow
Greencastle,
Indiana Aug 30, 1895 – To the Public – It having come to my knowledge that a
statement derogatory to the memory of Richard S. Farrow, father of JW Farrow
and formerly treasurer of Putnam County Indiana were being circulated in your
country to the detriment of JW Farrow, I hasten to make this statement.
From the year
1875 to 1883 I was almost continually deputy auditor of the county. Afterwards
deputy treasurer and from 1887 to 1892 was county auditor. That during that term from 1875 to 1879,
Richard S. Farrow was county treasurer and retired September 8th,
1879 and that he paid over to his successor every cent due the county as
treasurer. This I know of by my own personal knowledge, and the same is shown
by the records of the county. There is no doubt on the question and Mr. Farrow
does not owe Putnam County anything whatever.
During all the term, four years, in which RS Farrow was county
treasurer, his son JW Farrow was deputy under him and showed himself to be
thoroughly competent to fill that office.
Thoroughly honest and trustworthy; a good bookkeeper and an obliging and
Accommodating official. Respectfully, JL
Randel.
