Thursday April 27 1911 .75 cts. Cloudy and damp. Doc Courtney, a man with one arm says he has plowed about 40 gardens this season. He plowed Buddy Kelso's today and done a good job, better than some would do with use of two good arms.

The shredder accident, a daily feature somewhere, has at last struck Waveland, heretofore exempt A.L. Courtney is the victim and it costs him his left arm. He was shredding on J.D. Fisher's farm, Wapello, Wednesday morning, when the accident occurred. The fodder was very dry and crooked making it hard to feed. He was standing on the left-side forcing the stalks, when his hand caught in the feed rolls, drawing it and the forearm into the machine. Nelson Miles, who was running the engine, stopped and reversed almost instantly, but the hand was already gone and bones of the fore-arm splintered. Courtney was driven to Waveland, a distance of 7 miles, before surgical aid could be obtained. He made no complaint on the way home except that his hand - which was gone - was so cold. The arm was amputated at the elbow. He is now suffering a great deal of pain. It is a great misfortune and Mr. Courtney and his family have the hearty sympathy of the community.
