Corwine - Juliet - repeat fire

Source: Greencastle Banner Sept 9, 1875 p 3

A second attempt was made Tuesday morning about 3 o’clock to fire the residence of Mrs. Juliet Corwine.  Steven Vancleave discovered the flames while going to his meat shop and gave the alarm.  Residents of the vicinity rallied to the rescue with buckets and after much hard work extinguished the fire but not until it had damaged the wall and roof to the extent of about $200.  The fire engine was promptly on hand but its services were not required.  Coal oil had evidently been poured on the weatherboarding and a lot of combustibles placed against the building on the west side at the juncture of the kitchen with the front part and to this the match was applied..  It is the second attempt to burn the same building, the previous one having occurred the week before our great fire last year. What makes it more serious is the fact that a short time previous to the war the family lost a valuable barn and contents by fire while living on their farm near Bainbridge.  Mr. Corine was living at the time.  It does not seem reasonable that this excellent family should have enemies who would seek to do them this injury but the frequent repetition of these incendiary fires certainly indicates something of the kind. We trust that the guilty parties, whoever they are may yet be apprehended and punished. – kbz
