It was a time of year when people were thinking of gift giving, shopping and holiday cheer. While most everyone had their thoughts on Christmas that December in 1964, Richard Lindsay was busy assembling equipment and hiring people to staff a new radio station to serve Crawfordsville and the West Central Indiana area. On Dec. 12, 1964 WCVL signed on the air and began a new era of communication for West Central Indiana. The broadcasting studio was located over Resoner’s Jewelers on the corner of Main and Washington in downtown Crawfordsville where it remained until Nov 3, 1970 when the staff moved into the present-day complex on LaGrange Road, 3 miles northwest of downtown Crawfordsville. Notable milestones in WCVL’s growth years include the sale of the station in March of 1968 to its present owner, John L. Sinclair Jr. Sinclair’s contribution to WCVL is a story in itself. He had bought a station woefully short on modern equipment and experienced professional broadcasters. In the months and years ahead new office and broadcast equipment were purchased. Names like Joe Jarvis, Rich Adams, Lee Hawk, Dick Robinson, Les Shulte, plus others were added to the air staff to beef up the new sound of WCVL. Only one person, Dick Munroe (present-day sales manager) has been with WCVL since its birth. Today, WCVL prides itself on being one of the few small market stations in the nation with a three-man full-time news team, modern equipment and an announcing staff that averages five years of professional broadcast experience!
