Waveland - laugh

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 12 August 1898

The following is from the Chicago Journal: “Several days ago the members of the Ladies’ Aid Society of the Presbyterian Church in Waveland decided to re-varnish the pews in the house of worship. For that purpose they purchased a patent preparation, which gave the pews an elegant gloss and the appearance of being entirely new. Several days later a prominent townsman died and his funeral was held from the church, the auditorium being crowded. When at the close of the service the congregation attempted to arise to sing ‘God Be With You Till We Meet Again,’ there was trouble, for everyone was stuck fast to his seat. The new varnish had not been properly put on and the result was most disastrous to the Sunday clothes of Waveland. The episode all but broke up the funeral.”
