Skaggs - Emmett - love affair

Emmett Skaggs, a seventeen year old lad of Waynetown, attempted to commit suicide last Monday by swallowing a tin cup full of carbolic acid. The youth went to the barn and took a mouthful of the deadly drug. It failed to taste as sweet as he thought death would taste, however, so he spat it out and began to squeal like a pig under a gate. He was rolling on the floor and whooping lustily with the pain in his sadly scorched mouth when his brother found him. He was taken into the house and a doctor called in. Emmett had a spasm or two but finally came around all right. He will have to be nurtured on spoon victuals for a season, however, as his mouth is a great blister.  The cause of Emmett’s erring was love. It was all for love. Emmett loved a Waynetown girl but her father didn’t love him and threatened to fan his pantaloons if he came snooping around the girl any more. This restriction was too much for little Emmett’s sensitive nature and he concluded to flop across the Styx. But he is still with us. Poor little Emmett. - s
