The erection of monuments over the last resting place of the dead is a custom that dates far back into antiquity; yet with all the attention that has been paid to artistic taste and sculptured marble it is doubtful whether any nation can show more real taste than the Americans. This remark is called out by a sketch of the monument, just bought by the Enoch brothers to mark the grave of the late David Enoch, as exhibited by Mr. James M. Beerbrower, agent for the firm of WC Whitehead, of Indianapolis. The monument is of colossal proportions, graceful and a work of high art of the finest granite and will cost $2,500 when put in place next January at Oak Hill cemetery. This beautiful cemetery is already graced with many exquisite pieces of monumental work, among them the monuments of John Blair, John Bailey, Jos. Snyder and others. Crawfordsville heads the list of cities in liberality of this kind, the Enoch monument being the second only in cost in the state, Indianapolis and Evansville only having the finest in the state. Mr. Beerbrower has sold thousands of dollars worth of monuments in this county in the last four years and ought to feel proud of the artistic work which he gives his customers.
