Miller - SM - knife returned

SM Miller received the following letter a few days ago which speaks for itself: “Larued, Kas Sept 28, 1901. While crossing over a freight train on a load of steel rails found a knife which I suppose is yours as a present from a friend. On one side of the handle is inscribed SM Miler, Darlington, Ind for Homer.”  On the other side the picture of horse and buggy and dog. You can have by writing Fred W. Willoway.  Roe was at a loss to understand and thought of an infernal machine until Homer Heffner of the 4th US Infantry was called and he explained that while in camp Presidio, Cali he had bought such a knife for him and that it had been either lost or stolen and that he had thought no more about it, but this was the identical knife. Roe immediately answered and today is the proud possessor of the knife and proud that Kansas has a man so thoughtful and honest. As this knife was bought while the boys were going out some two years ago it has a history
