Hampton - Elmer - mean trick on him
Source: Crawfordsville Review 22 June 1915 p 1
– Elmer Hampton, 22 years old of near Whitesville was brought to this city yesterday by two young men from that place and turned over to Police Chief Hill. They explained that Hampton had always been dull mentally but that recently boys and men about Whitesville had been playing practical jokes on him. Hampton has worked and helped to support his mother. He ran a grocery account, it is said and persons thinking that they would have fun with him erased the figures on his book and changed them. The book was then shown to Hampton and he was told that he would go to the penitentiary for the act. On several other occasions he has been frightened in a similar manner. When placed in the cell he moaned and acted queerly. Later in the day he seemed to be soothed. A doctor examined him.
