PUBLIC MEETING – A meeting of the democratic citizens of Montgomery County was held in pursuance of previous notice at the courthouse in Crawfordsville on Saturday the 28th of Nov 1835 whereupon Capt. Hosea Dean was called to the chair and James Helverson was chosen secretary. The object of the meeting being made known by esq’r M’Connell, a motion was made that a committee of three he appointed to draft reolutions suitable for the occasion.
Esqrs M’Connell, Nelson and James Helverson were unanimously chosen said committee and after a few minutes absence, returned with the following resolutions, which were unanimously adopted
Resolved, that we have entire confidence in the wisdom, integrity and patriotism of our present chief magistrate, Andrew Jackson, and unanimously approve the measures of his administration and believe that they will be fraught with the most salutary results towards sustaining the purity of the constitution and the future liberties of the American republic.
Resolved that we believe the best interest of our country depends upon a strict adherence to those measures and that upon their maintenance depend the equal rights and privileges and the future prosperity of the American people
Resolved that the preservation of the principles involved in those measures depends upon the union, harmony, and concert with which the democratic party shall act in the coming presidential contest.
Resolved that we view it as clear and decided evidence of the wishes of the democratic party expressed in the nominations of the Baltimore Convention by delegates chosen immediately by the people; and that we will heartily and honorable unite in the support of Martin VanBjuren for the presidence and Richard M. Johnson for the vice presidency of the United States.
Resolved that 17 delegates be appointed to attendthe state convention to be holden at Indianapollis on 8th January next, for thepurpose of forming an electoral ticket favorable to the election of the Baltimore nominees. Whereupon, the following gentlemen were appointed to attend said convention: John Nelson; Hosea Dean; Isaac C. Elston; Henry Lee; Chilion Johnson; Ezekiel M’Connell; John Williams; James Helverson; Martin VanHook; William Stonpson; John H. Goodbar; David Vance; JAMES STITT; Absolom Ketcham, esq; John Kerr, Solom McKinney and John Dunn.
Resolved, that a committee of vigilance, consisting of five persons be chosen; whereupon the following named gentlemen were appointed said committee: Hosea Dean; Alley May, esq; Mr. Dorsey; Otha H. Swim; and James Helverson.
Resolved, that James Helverson be requested to furnish for publication a copy of the Wabash Mercury published at Lafayette.
Resolved, that the proceedings of this meeting be signed by the chairman and secretary and that a copy of the same he published in the Crawfordsville Record; and that the Democrat at Indianapolis, Mercury at Lafayette and the Constellation od Covington, each by requestion to copy those proceedings - Hosea-Dean, chairman – J.
