Breedlove, Ada - kidnapped

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 10 July 1896

James Breedlove and wife, of North Walnut Street, are greatly exercised as to the whereabouts of their fourteen year old daughter, Ada, who was taken from home six weeks ago, since which time no word from her has reached them. About six weeks ago a stranger about forty years old, of sandy complexion and poorly dressed, drove up to the Breedlove home in an old rattletrap of a buggy and stated that he was looking for a girl to work about the house of his son-in-law. He stated that he, himself, lived four miles from Darlington, just over the Boone County line, while his son-in-law lived near him in this county. He said the work would be light work in a garden patch and finally engaged Ada Breedlove to go with him. Her mother rather demurred, but finally consented as the girl, who, while but fourteen, was strong and well developed, was quite anxious to go. The stranger eventually drove off with Ada, however, stating that he would return her home the next Saturday evening or if she wished to stay and work longer, that he would call and tell the Breedloves about it. If the stranger gave any name, Mrs. Breedlove has forgotten it and inquiry about Darlington in the neighborhood where he alleged that he lived has failed to reveal either Ada or the man who took her. The Breedloves are now greatly excited and fear that Ada has met with foul play. -s
