Underage Smoking in Crawfordsville
Source: Thorntown Argus 12 Oct 1901 p 3
Crawfordsville special: On Saturday Mayor Elmore of this city held a court of inquiry, examining over 50 small boys from 10-15 years old, who had been reported as having become accustomed to use tobacco. The youngsters without reserve divulged the names of the dealers from whom they had made their purchases, and the mayor turned the information over to the prosecuting attorney. Warrants were at once issued for the offenders and over 50 arrests were made Saturday night. Nearly every grocer and tobacco dealer in the city was caught in the net and quite a wail has gone up in consequence. The dealers have settled with the mayor. The investigation was set on foot by the parents of some of the children who had become addicted to the cigarette habit. --–kbz
