Toney, Elmer - held-up

Source: Crawfordsville Star 26 Sept 1889 p 1

Elmer Toney, a young man who has been in the employ of Scott Steele for the past two years was “held-up” last Thursday night and badly beaten with a club.  He lives in the north part of town and was on his way home about 11 p.m. with $30 or $40 in his pocket. As he passed the mouth of the alley at the rear of the Nutt House something which he must have thought was lightning struck him in the mouth and the fellow whoever it was, made a grab for his pocket book  Toney held on to the wallet and made such an outcry that his assailant flew. Early Friday morning a colored man named Harry Arnold was arrested on suspicion and lodged in jail.  It is thought he is the right party. - kz
