Source: Crawfordsville 28 Feb 1884 p 1

Charles Swearingen, of Ripley Township pleaded guilty in Circuit Court on Tuesday to the charge of burglary and begged court clemency. He was fined $50 and sentenced to one year in the penitentiary. There was a thrilling scene in the court room when the sentence was passed upon him. His offense consisted in burglarizing Denman & Mitchell’s store at Alamo and robbed it to $65. He had been on a long spree and was half crazed when he committed the crime. He is not considered a bad man. Whiskey alone is responsible for his downfall.  Since sentence was pronounced on him he has been plunged in profound melancholy.
