Crawfordsville, Ind Sept 5- The police have strong evidence that William Staples, the negro arrested at Rochester last Friday is guilty of the brutal assault on Mrs. Jacob Waddel on the outskirts of Crawfordsville a week ago. The chain of evidence is almost complete and all that remains is the identification by the victim. It was the intention to confront him Sunday but public feeling is bitter and on account of the Labor Day celebration it was postponed. The authorities were fearful that a positive identification would incite an attempt to lynch the negro because so many visitors were in town today.
