A pleasant family reunion in part took place Tuesday at the hospitable home of RE Bryant, 412 W. Main Street the occasion being the 91st birthday of his father-in-law, Mr. John Rice, Sr. Of 7 children four were able to be present: Mrs. Truax; Mrs. Bryant; TF Rice of Chicago and wife and Jno. B. Rice and wife of this city; the second generation being represented by Miss Edith and Frank Bryant. Many other relatives and friends were there in spirit and after ample justice had been done to the beautifully and bountifully prepared noon-day meal, letters were read from friends of “ye olden time,” now living in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Missouri and California. Mr. Rice’s residence for some 50 years was in Southern Indiana at Corydon once the Capital of the state.

April 16 was the 86th birthday of John Rice, Sr, of this city was  celebrated by an elegant dinner at the family residence. Toasts were responded to by Mr. Rice and friends who helped him celebrate the event. Numerous elegant presents were given by those present. The dinner was an elaborate affair and ample justice was done to it by those surrounding the groaning tables. The post prandial part was very interesting.  Speeches were made by the host and several others among the visitors, Mrs. JE Kenton of Springfield, Mo reading a sort of biography of the old gentleman, prepared at his dictation and relating facts in his early life and history, full of reminiscence both humorous and pathetic. Those present and partaking of the repast were TF Rice and wife and Master Willie Rice of Chicago; Thomas N. Rice and Dr. Harrison Rice of Rockville; Alex A. Rice of Lafayette; Jas Rice of Waveland; Mrs. Margaret Sidwell of Rockville; Mrs. Mary Duncan of New Albany; Mrs. SE Kenton of Springfield, Mo; Capt. RE Bryant and wife, Edith and Frank Bryant and JB Rice and wife of this city.
