Peebles - Orville - shot

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal 18 Jan 1890 p 1

Orville Peebles, 14-year-old son of Walter Peebles, living in the Gravelly Run neighborhood, six miles east of the city met with an accident Saturday afternoon which came near resulting fatally. He was in the woods hunting rabbits with his dog and shot gun and while standing on a log the dog gave a leap and landed against the gun and discharged it. The load passed through his right hand and continued on its course between his coat and body until it entered his jaw beneath the angle. The shot struck his teeth and loosened them but knocked none of them out. Neither was his jaw bone broken. The third and little finger of his wounded hand had to be amputated. After he was wounded he walked perhaps a 100 yards when he fell. He was seen by Goerge Hughes who ran to him and assisted him to Mahlon Butler’s nearby and medical aid summoned. He was taken home that evening and is now doing fairly well.
