Last Wednesday Henry Nolan, of Beckville, shot Wm Miller, living near that place, with a shot gun. It seems that Nolan had recently borrowed a buggy of a man named Wilson, living in the edge of Boone County, with which to make a visit to Putnam County. While on the visit, Nolan met with an accident by which the buggy received damages which it cost him some $25 to repair. On the day of the shooting, a neighbor in company with George Meek and Miller, was passing Nolan’s, when one of the party remarked that his (Nolan’s) Putnam County trip had cost him $25. Gollady, with who it seems Nolan had previously had a difficulty, replied that he wished it had been a thousand dollars. This remark, and probably others, one of which it is said was addressed to a dog, came to the ears of Nolan, who followed after them with a shot gun. Soon after passing him, however, the party separated, Gollady and Meek turning aside and Miller keeping in the road. Nolan, following along the road, overtook Miller and gave him the contents of his gun as stated. The load was probably intended for Gollady. Nolan appeared before Esquire Ramsey on Monday, where he waived an examination and gave bail for his appearance at the next term of court. Miller’s injuries were slight and he was able to be in town on Monday. The gun, it seems, was loaded with small shot, which was discharged at long range. Otherwise the consequences might have been very serious. -s
