Crawfordsville, June 17 – Three men and a boy accused of complicity in the theft of a large number of articles from the home of Mrs. William Strange, a widow near Alamo, were arraigned before Mayor Thomas L. Cooksey in police court Tuesday morning two of them entering pleas of guilty the other two pleas of not guilty.  Frank Carver, who was arrested by officers last week entered a plea of guilty to the charge and was given a sentence of 90 days at the state penal farm.  In addition, he was fined $10 and costs of $20 in all.  Carver had some of the stolen property in his machine when he was arrested by Chief Harrison Young and Officer Merle Remley.  Ralph McClure, 16-year-old resident of Alamo also entered a plea of guilty to the charge but sentence was withheld until a later date by Mayor Cooksey.  The other two to be arraigned were Jacob McClure, father of Ralph and Eal (sic) Watt of this city.  Part of the stolen property was found in the homes of both of the men.  Their trials will be held in city court Thursday morning.  Several youths who live near Alamo were arrested in connection with the series of thefts at the Strange home but form charges have not as yet been filed against them it is understood.  The value of the property stolen from the widow’s home was estimated at several hundred dollars.  Several separate offenses are charged against those held in connection with the robberies. The Strange home is located at some distance from the road and it was necessary for the thieves to carry their loot for quite a distance to the road due to the fact that here was no driveway which was accessible.  The thefts occurred while Mrs. Strange, who is employed at Rockville was away from home.  Mrs. Strange accompanied the officers in the roundup of the alleged thieves a few weeks ago and was able to identify articles taken from her home as they were discovered in the various homes visited.  Most of the loot has been recovered although some of it is still missing.  --- transcribed by  kbz
