Keen - Lee - gun accident
Source: Crawfordsville Review 2 April 1892 p 4
Lee Keen, the 13-year-old son of Upton Keene, colored, met with an accident last Saturday which will send him through life an awful cripple. On Saturday morning, Lee, in company with a young companion named Bell were hunting rabbits in the vicinity of the iron bridge on the Attica road and in going from one field into another the lads attempted to crawl under a fence instead of climbing over. Lee was first and after successfully getting through attempted to pull his gun after him. In some mysterious manner as is usual in such cases, the gun was discharged, the load entering the little fellow’s leg, some of the shot however passing on up and lodging in his face, almost destroying the sight of one eye and terribly lacerating his nose. The leg was horribly mangled and the little fellow rolled and shrieked in agony. Help was soon on the ground and the wounded boy was carried to his father’s home near the Dry Branch trestle and Drs. Ensminger and Green called. It was found necessary to amputate the limb and the operation was performed successfully late Saturday evening and the boy now bids fair to recover.
