Huffmire - Lon - shot

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 16 April 1897
A very distressing accident occurred last Friday in the Bluff Mills neighborhood near Pine Hills. The widow of the late Wm Huffmire lives on a farm there and with her lives her seventeen year old son, Lon.
Last evening Lon sat in the house working with a thirty two caliber rifle and was so engaged when he was told by his mother to perform some little duty. Instead of obeying at once he went on working with the rifle. This disobedience irritated his mother who finally walked quickly up and seizing the rifle by the butt gave it a quick jerk, never for a moment dreaming that it was loaded. The boy held onto the barrel and in some way the weapon was discharged. The ball tore through his knee, broke his thigh bone and then buried itself in the flesh. The horrified mother quickly summoned help and every attention was bestowed upon the lad, who suffered the keenest agony. The ball was not found by the doctors, who pronounced the case a most serious one.

Mrs. Huffmire is fairly crazed by her grief and refuses to be comforted. The case is a very sad one as the boy will be a cripple for life at best.  - s
