Grubb, Mary - gas in hotel

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 3 March 1899

Saturday Miss Mary Grubb went to Chicago on business connected with her duties as drawing teacher in the public schools and while there had an experience that she will not soon forget. She, with a young lady friend, stopped at a well known hotel and upon retiring Saturday evening turned off the gas. The valve was defective and instead of stopping when the orifice for the admission of gas into the burner was reached turned on past the proper place and admitted the gas again. The fluid not being lighted, of course it escaped into the room in a small quantity and when the inmates became conscious of the fact they were barely able to get to the door and throw it open and then fell unconscious to the floor. The hotel attendants noticed the smell of gas and found the victims as stated. Miss Grubb had to be worked with all day Sunday and was brought to her home in this city Monday. -s
