Groendyke - Peter
Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal 10 July 1896
Thursday of last week Peter Gronendyke, a young married man residing in the Breaks neighborhood, met with an accident which threatens to have a fatal termination. After dinner he mounted his horse and started for a farm not far away where threshing was in progress. Some time later his horse returned home riderless, and fear being thus aroused, a search for the missing man was instituted. He was finally found lying on the roadside frightfully bruised and injured and in an unconscious condition. Dr. Hutchings was hastily summoned from town and found the young man’s condition to be most serious. He was bleeding at the ears and gave other evidences of having sustained severe injuries at the base of the brain. His spine and shoulders were also badly injured. On Friday he regained consciousness for a short season and stated that he had become dizzy and had fallen from his horse. Dr. Hutchings is as yet unable to declare the outcome of the case, but entertains grave doubts as to his recovery, the injuries being of so serious a character. -s
