George - Ellis
Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 9 July 1897
The fact that Dan George is alive today is no fault of the intention of John Ellis. Ellis is a log hauler who is employed at the Cross Mill in Parke County, but who formerly lived here. During his Crawfordsville residence, Ellis aspired to be the steady company of Myrtle Oversteak, daughter of Mrs. Mat Oversteak, who resides near the Monon Station. George, who made his home at the Oversteak mansion, objected to this and this caused bad blood between the men. Saturday, Ellis came here to spend the Fourth and in the evening called at the Oversteaks. He and George soon became involved in a quarrel which resulted in Ellis drawing a revolver and shooting George through the head. The ball struck below the mouth and tearing through the jaw lodged near the ear. The wound is not dangerous and George will soon be as good as ever. After the shooting, Ellis ran away, but by 9:30 o’clock was captured by the police and jailed. The young man has every prospect of a good long term in the state’s prison. He has been a notorious tough and is the same chap who carved up Nig Sering a year or so ago.
