DUNN caught in robbery - 1859

Source: Lafayette Weekly Courier, Tue, Aug 23, 1859 ·Page 1

Several stores were broken open at Crawfordsville a few nights since, and the money drawers robbed of a small amount of currency, including several hundred copper cents. There was no clue to the thieves until Satrday, when suspicion rested upon a young man named Dunn, who had taken the train for Greencastle that morning, and was observed to be remarkably flush of coppers. He was followed to that town, but observing the officers at a distance of two or three squares, he at once divined their object, and gave leg bail. There was an interesting race. Hundreds of citizens, men, boys, and a full compliment of dogs joined in the chase; but Dunn was too swift for them, and gaining a swam south of town, made his escape. He was captured however on Monday, and brought to Crawfordsville for trial. He confesses to a participation in the robbery. The larceny had been planned by others, and he remained on the outside to watch while his companions effected an entrance, and carried off the money. In dividing the booty, the coppers fell to his share.   Thanks muches to Lena – she’s always sending me neat items
