Curts - Allen - manacles

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 29 December 1899

Friday the citizens of Crawfordsville were treated to a rather unusual sight, that of a man being led through the streets simply weighted down with handcuffs and other irons calculated to restrain him from a dash for liberty. The man who had him in custody was Sheriff Miller, of Fountain County, and he carried a regular arsenal in his pockets to supplement the metallic impediments on his prisoner. The man so manacled was Allen Curts, and the sheriff doubtless had good cause to be wary of him. Curts is a noted horse thief and was convicted of his favorite crime in Covington last February. After his conviction he succeeded in making his escape from the jail and nothing more was heard from him until recently when it was ascertained that he was in Ottumwa, Iowa. At considerable expense he was arrested there and brought back. He was kept in jail here closely guarded until the north bound Monon train arrived in the afternoon when he was taken to Michigan City. Curts is said to be an ugly customer, and Sheriff Miller was extremely nervous.
